don't really know what you mean but sylenth1 has one of the best sounds for a softsynth + Fantastic Effects + easy to use + flexible + reasonably priced + huge bank of 1400 + presets.

a simple synth that sounds good would be

Arturia MiniMoog V (not the modular version if you want simplicity)
MiniMonsta
Massive (looks scary but its very simple and routing is simply drag and drop)
Strobe

don't really know anymore that sound as good as sylenth and are as easy to program as sylenth, from the list above i would say that massive is probably the only one that will also cover the same range of sounds as sylenth.

I probably don't know what the hell I'm talking about, You probably

Sylenth IMO is not the best sounding VST out there. It sounds great, dont get me wrong, but its not the BEST. However.... It is the easiest IMO. Period.

When it gets crazy is when you add tons of modulation options. It can be really confusing if you dont know what to look for.

how can synths with less Oscillators and less modulation options (i know strobe has more mod) produce a larger range of possible sounds.

I'm not big on synths, but I'd say go through this list, and d/l the demos of the synths that you like the look of. Try before you buy is always the best option imo
