do you guys prefer to have the bass holding down the bottom end of the track or the kick..?

The kick as it's the one thing that should be smack bang in the centre hitting with full impact. If your kick is good from the offset it's alot easier for your other parts to just fall into place, including a bass. But it's milk and sugar really you can't really have one without the other.

I don't take sugar

But yeah, I think the trick is getting BOTH of them to hold their own. Though that said I will most likely work off of the kick, and make the bass fit in with that, but when it's the Bass's turn, I want it to nail it too...
