How To Make - Tech House With Alex Tepper / 330

@ Oscar no problem mate glad i could help

Im not knocking Alex Tepper, he clearly is a master in this game and makes a living out of it and has a music CV longer than his arm BUT as far as tutorials go I dont rate this at all. There is no &#034knowledge&#034 imparted here, Alex builds up a track from loops and explains what processing he has done on each loop but doesnt really explain why he is choosing each bit, nothing about how he came up with the bassline, he makes various comments about how the &#034groove&#034 is building up nicely but never explains why he thinks it is or why certain bits are working or what &#034groove&#034 is for that matter. This just another &#034HOW to add loops and effects in Ableton&#034 tutorial which has become very typical of Sonic Academy. I think for people to progess there needs to be more WHY certain things are done, WHY certain things work etc

i think sonic academy should post more tutorials like this one !

seems like you want SA to come in and write your tracks for you. why you like sounds and choose the ones you do is down to your own artistic intuition. he chose the sounds he did because he liked them, what more is there to say? its not a science, its art. perhaps if it were a mixing masterclass your argument would hold more value

Nope I never said I wanted SA to write my tracks for me, where would the fun and enjoyment be in that? I would merely like to be able to learn from other producers. There are more than enough tutorials on here about &#034add this hat&#034 or &#034this is how your filter a drum loop&#034 what I was / am looking for was a bit more theory in to WHY he was choosing the various loops and yeah I&#039m sure he did like them but it does actually go a bit deeper than that as it IS a science and your comment goes to prove whats missing in this tutorial.

I was wondering why he chose the various loops in the track in the context of things like were they creating poly rhythms, syncopation, rhythmic displacement or Metrical Dissonance. You see these are some of the things that make music work and make people like or dislike it, dance or not dance if its not right.... It may be art... but there is a sh*t ton of science in it as well. He didnt just bang a load of loops together because he liked them and.. oh.. how cool.. it actually all works really well together.. what a coincidence.

And as for... &#034If this were a mixing masterclass&#034 where on earth in my comment did I mention mixing?

not impressed with this at all. Alex says altho he uses loops for this track, he will &#034show us how to make them our own&#034... this consists of muting bits of the loop and a sidechain. Sorry but this tut is really awful. Alex is incoherent and dull and importantly ... he imparts almost ZERO knowledge whatsover in the whole 2 hours. Sorry but I had to be honest BECAUSE I LIKE THIS SITE... you can do A LOT better

So glad someone agrees with me!

really poor effort on this one.

there is no structure in this tutorial not happy

For me, I learnt plenty from this tutorial.

This guy is an absolute master at using Ableton. I see the value in using Arrange view exclusively. He is also a master artist and craftsman. He takes a very organic approach to music assembly, where so often I get too analytical/detail obsessed. He comes from a &#034vibe,&#034 &#034big picture&#034 concept. Love it!

Thank you for this tutorial.

i like this groove a lot, way too much negativity here, simple straightforward

not a fan of this tutorial, its a little all over the place and the tutor may be a great/amazing producer but he doesn’t sell it at teaching in this tutorial

This was an interesting tutorial. I learned new tricks and perhaps quicker ways to do the basics. I never thought to use loops to set up a groove this way!

Great Tutorial. LEarned a few tricks

why all the negativity? This guy was straightforward, simple and did really well on this tutorial. The kind of dudes spreading negativity below are the kind of guys who love to take shortcuts and jump on those “learn how to make a track in 5 minutes!!” videos, lol
