Old schoolish house

watched some more tutorials and tried a different approach towards this to me still very mysterious topic of mixing and mastering.

the drums sound a bit flat and narrow to me. there is a long reverb on the clap, and kick+hihats are sent to a very short plate reverb cut everything below 400 and above 2000hz and used the imager from izotope ozone. makes it a bit better. but i also have no idea what the fundamental problem is to then find a solution for it.

for the bass, i don’t have speakers, just headphones that all sound different. depending on the time of the day, it either sounds too quiet or too loud. what is it?

If you are using headphones - then your best bet is to find a track that you know sounds good bass wise and try to mimic the sound in your own mix.

thanks. sounds disappointingly different. the bass is too deep and too quiet.

some glasses of wine later. bass is more present and plays one octave higher, changed the bass melody to remove some of the “stumpling” notes that sounded annoying when played with the other instruments, and doubled the bass with something that sounds like an 80s electric bass. had to pitch down the other synth, before it was playing 3 semitones higher but with the cleared bass it sounded too dissonant and like a mistake. on the other hand this kind of destroys what i interesting about the song. next song will be italo disco again. doesn’t need so much thinking.

I think the track could need some variety ? Is this really old School house style ?

house, techno. i honestly don’t know the difference. two decades ago it was for us simply: if it has a melody it’s house. if its noise it’s techno. ^^ and i remember hearing some songs in this direction back then.
