Saying that, I listened to a load of stuff just before I went to bed & thought it was dreadful sh!t. But I tought it was pretty cool for the last time I heard it. I’ll probably listen to it all again later & think its brilliant once more - thats the way it goes!
Think sometimes your brain / ears & mood can play tricks on ya. I’ll usually recgonise that, have a chat with meself & stop the music right then.[/quote]
when that happens to me ill leave it and not listen to it for a week or so. if when ill listen to it again it sounds crap ill ditch it or delete the parts i dont like
nice to know im not the only one with this problem, i reckon all the best producers out their eventually say feck it that’ll do…we all want to acheive that perfect sound in our head but it seems technology just offers endless variation to the sounds we come up with.
I try to remember that as long as one other person out their gets my vibe…thats enough…more than one is rapture…their will be always some dush with a negative response
What I like to do is gather a playlist of tracks I like, load it to my Ipod, then I take a long drive usually around an 1.5-2 hours. I get myself psyched about the music I’m listening to and it inspires me to figure out what I want to do with my tracks.
I usually take this drive 2 times a week. I know not everyone has the capability to do this, but usually I’ll take scenic routes and take pictures along the way. It’s great to relax and leave all other stressors behind giving me a positive outcome each time.
Thanks everyone - its been a while since I posted this and its great see everyone’s ideas keeping the thread alive.
I’m in a much more positive frame of mind - I got rid of just about everything music production wise and kept Maschine and my guitar. I found that getting rid of all the extra bumpf I’d collected over the years was incredibly liberating, and stopped the problem of becoming just too swamped in technology. For me, having more options open to me paradoxically shuts me down! Working through a limited setup forces me to stop twatting about and actually write something. Very refreshing!
Anyway, keep your ideas coming - and thanks again for all your support!
another thing is to surround yourself with other music besides EDM. I listen to a ton of post rock like explosions in the sky, sigur ros, god is an astronaut, daturah
actually from my latest track i pulled a chord progression from Daturah’s “Hybrisma” to make Hybristic… see if you can find it
