Problems with a Drop

As an experiment I haven’t layered the kick or attempted to use a different one. To see what I could get from DKFH Superior on its own as if a live drummer was playing that specific Ludwig kit.

But overall feedback is that the kick sound is weak so guess its time to throw that idea out the window

Ok this is the same remix 1 day on has anyone got any advice on tightening it up a bit more? I’m relatively happy with most of it perhaps arrangment could be better? Any mixing pitfalls to look out for that I might have jumped in without noticing?

Seriously any assistance/ideas would be apreciated guys thanks.[/quote]

Im guessing you used to play Megaman as a kid, huh?

I really like the style of synths that are used, keep it up! Are you trying to make liquid?

one thing that i learned about Drum and Bass. is that the Kick have to be pretty much Clicky and have to cut well on the mix. not so much like the House kicks where it have lots of weight . and also remember that your kick have to be in mono to deliver power.

the bass processing is another story … and it takes alot of patience and trials and errors. compare how the pros sounds with your track. that should help u alot

now i have some ideas about the arrangement you might want to try . try to do like an outro before the big brake. programming different bass lines and going straight to the break . cut all low ends from the brake and create atmosphere with pads . snare rolls and a riser and that bring all the elements of the main loop back .

that should fix the issue of having a better break , i dont think that this issue dont have to see anything with the mix.

about the mix of your track . you might need to practice more. compare your tracks to the pros. and you will see that there is a lot to learn.

Mixing takes practice and time ( i think we all are struggling on this area still hehe ).

hope that helps dude.

You could lower the volume of your break a bit, the sudden rise in volume when everything kicks in can be a good source for impact. The key is subtlety, dont make anything too obvious. I dont really agree with ducking frequencies randomly or just cos someone says you should. You really want to get your bass and kick working together well so that it doesnt need too much EQ. Also dont lose faith in the vibe and feel of your track. If you really want to use that kick becausr its a live sample or watever then you can. You just have to put in your other sounds around the kick. Also im not a fan of the mix glue preset, it seems to really push up sounds too much and it becomes too apparant. As for your snare you need to use eq to find where the whack of your snare lies. Boost this. You may need to layer a few snares as you want a nice crisp snare that smacks people in the chest. It will help drive your track forward.

Thanks for the tips. A lot has been going on since I posted this up. New job new house new acoustic space (Conservatory!! :frowning: ) to treat, upgrades to computer. Basically all boils down to had bugger all chance to do any real work at home. Still I’m working on a dubstep remix for a Leeds based metal band MISHKIN which I can hopefully finish before the end of the year :S . The remix so far is in bits you could say. I have about 6 version of choruses verses breakdowns and whatever all in different projects as my old pc was giving up the ghost and I was hitting the CPU limit. Now with a shiny i7 and 16Gig hopefully should be able to push on with it. No doubt I will be looking for an idea or two from here. I did the postep tutorials as a prelim to starting and I think I get the jist of what im trying to create. So far I have really enjoyed hacking up the vocals from the song and creating new sounds with them and trying out lots of vocal processing techniques.
