Finish tracks even if they suck… having 50 unfinished projects is baaad and you need to learn the bit after making a cool loop.
+100000!!!

My tracks became so much better once I stared finishing them.

maybe that’s why mine suck at the moment, not managed to get anything finished in a while. apart from the hard dance one but that doesn’t really count.

It’s easy to fall in the trap of thinking a tune is crap purely because you’ve overplayed it to yourself too much, try to think back at how you felt when you FIRST heard it.

If in doubt, play it to a couple of friends. If you’re really bored of it, come back to it another day with fresh ears.

Even if you just put a start and end on them and burn it to a cd as a finished piece you can put it on your “My Tunes CD” (weve all got them right?). You will always be inspired even from the tracks you dont like… learning what not to do is as important as learning what to do.

I haven’t actually finished a track for about 18 months…it’s probably about time I revisited some my old stuff and got something complete.

I get bored with tracks alot. thats why I like working on projects with others.

I try not to let too much time go between tracks.

I have 2 tracks I am working on right now that are like 60% done…

But like you guys I get bored sometimes listening to it over and over again.

That is when I will just go “experiment”… I am working on 2 remixes as well… Those are taking a lot longer then the original tracks because I have a very specific sound in my head that I want to achieve and it is difficult to figure it out.

I do feel as though every track I get done, is better then the last.

Also…

My tip: Play with samples. Samples add a whole other level to your productions.

I havent finished a track yet! i suppose ive only been messing with DAWs for a few months but yhea, i like a track at the start then i just hear it to much and get sick of it. Il try out some of the stuff you all said though. Nice to know i’m not the only one with this problem!

I think the hardest thing for me though is intros. I don’t know why, but i have a big problem with writing them ha.

Lets keep this up the top, keep on with your tips guys, some great stuff has been posted so far

dus every1 use melody kits from the vengeance packs? iv found a few that sound great but feel like a loser if i just drop them into a track and say its mine:L

and how do u change ur avitar thing?

i think the intention for the vengeance samples in that respect are to be used for inspiration not just drag and dropped. maybe some of the full kits are better used in live sets rather than writing tracks.

Group your drums, add compression to get them gelling.  Roll of frequencies, i tend to roll of quite alot of hihats etc… as they dont really have bottom end & can take unrequired space in the mix.

Make a good template to load , ie midi channels, audio channels, labelled up, so you have a good basic foundation to work with.

clean your studio.

I clean mine & next day, paper work piled up , everything back to square one, i do like it when its clean though

Some very good tips here!

My tip is to read all of the above and you won’t go wrong

Great stuff, all updated.

Here’s mine.

Tune your Bass to your best Kick… if you cant make or layer Kicks.

Choose a Key to work in @ the start of your track. The different elements dont have to all be in the same pitch. Try placing Perc / Snares etc… at different notes in the same Key.

If you are going to EQ, keep it musical. Get a Frequency to Musical Pitch chart. Tape it to your desk & cut where it makes sense.

Put Voxengo Span Free Spectrum Analyzer Plugin, FFT, Real-Time [VST, AU, AAX] - SPAN - Voxengo on your master. Solo what you wish to inspect. Hover the cursor over peaks & you can see the Musical Pitch of the Frequencies in your sound. Stick it on LO_Freq & Use it on Kicks / Bass / Anything, Everything.

hey ICN, apart from the multi channel wave display - which looks really useful - does it anything more than Ableton’s built in analyzer?

Dont think so… does what it says on the tin really.

Remember some of the Guys here who use Live saying that they prefer it to the inbuilt one. Personally, I find it easier to zoom in & out.
