Weekend

I wonder…

Jamie I have identified a serious health and safety issue in your studio. I can’t stress how important it will be to actually trip over those cables on the floor. Potentially it could result in a few months off work sitting at home making dime badass techno tracks

I’ll be right back!

Oops! I’ve fallen and can’t get up!!

Don’t go into the light!

Lol :hehe:

Disclaimer…

I do not accept liability

LOL

Too late… Lawyers will be calling shortly.

:P:D

Unless you’d like to surrender any rare vinyl or vintage synths? I can forget things very easily when tempted with electronics and such…

Well since James is losing his house tomorrow on Monday - I’ll be checking the local skips to serve him the papers :stuck_out_tongue:

Wait, what? I have been away for a while… What’s going on?

Fk - C0 !!

Is that the freq that opens bowels?? LOL

Man… you seem to have a sweet setup, bet your stff on the walls helps no end.

Its funny with h’phones sometimes, what you say is true… and unfortunately the opposite fairly frequently too! LOL
JamieinNC (12/11/2011)
Well, sort of. The reason why the lowest note on the piano is A0 is because anything below that is very difficult to identify by pitch, even if the person listening has acute hearing. I know this because when I was studying at Indiana University in Bloomington, I would often play the Bosendorfer they had in the main auditorium. It had an extended keyboard that went down to C0! Not only was it incredibly disorienting to play, but the sounds down there were almost too loud to control effectively.

Sounds generated electronically down there will be more for “oomph” than for functional pitch or harmonic structure, similar to the extended piano I just mentioned. My monitors and sub can produce pitches a bit lower than A0, especially now that my room is about as acoustically tight as I can get it, but they will only be for open-air speakers and subs that can handle the range. The second I put my headphones on, I lose the low end quite a bit. Even with headphones that extend way down to 20Hz!

Kind of off topic, but I have moved comfortably to exclusively monitor-oriented music making processes, thus getting out of the habit of using the cans all the time. I only put the headphones on when I need surgical like sound assessment, or to A/B what I’m actually hearing on the monitors. Turns out the monitors are the best judge of the sound, and what comes through the headphones tends to sound worse.

I did a comparison of mastered tunes from all sorts of genres and found that the balance of the music on the monitors was “tighter” than the balance found on the headphones, which made the music seem very disjunct. Of course, I’ve learned not to use any dynamics processing until the mixing process is as good as I can get it. I’ve finally arrived at the point in confidence where I am not throwing a compressor on everything right away. Helps keep things organized and it is also easier to keep track of what actually needs a compressor in the first place. I’ve found that the only clue one might get for needing a compressor on a track is if there never seems to be a fader setting that makes you happy. If you’re always jerking that thing around trying to make the sound fit, it probably needs a compressor. If the fader is fine, leave the fkcing compressor in the VST lounge.

Consequently, these are things I’ve been studying the past few months…

Is that the very limit of the speakers Jamie?

Haha yes! Yeah the treatment makes the room quite tight. People are usually surprised at the change walking from the hall into the room. They notice it immediately!

I’d love to get some crappy speakers and a nice Firewire routing system so I can A/B/C tunes without having to bounce crap out and listen to it on an Ipod or whatever. I could have the good monitors on A, the headphones on B, and the crappy system on C. Oh, and I could leave my MS-20 plugged in and ready to go at any moment. That’s the next project…
jjdejong0 (12/11/2011)
For the first time ever i think i fully agree with ICN, things seemed to have come to a mind altering halt here on SA. Whats the deal?
Honestly… without a doubt - the lack of regular tuts & regular tech tips.

The site has been on a real plateau for the last while… and the site improvements etc… (the new search system…) dont seem to have increased what everyone wants, which is the amount of tuts being increased.

I’d say also the minimal communication & involvement in the forums by the 2 lads doesnt help. Its a missed opportunity them not getting more involved in the “Tunes” section.

Their small presence in the “requests” section, possibly gives people the impression that they dont really get involved. How true would that statement be?

Forums are a living breathing thing. If you dont get involved with them, they die. Thats the cycle.

AND loads of subs have lapsed for regulars. The general concensus is that everyone is going to wait until its worth re-subbing. This means more content.

Love the site. But there are a few things that could be improved? yeah?

I agree with what your saying, John, but I’m going to have to say once again that from a music educator’s viewpoint, everything one would need to make a really great tune right this minute is already located in the videos section.

I’ll reiterate that people are too concerned with the “sound du jour” when they really should be concerning themselves with the “concept.” I think I’ve already mentioned elsewhere in the archives that if this was my website I’d teach concepts as opposed to style. It would serve a two-fold purpose: It would provide what no other website on the planet provides, and it would weed out all those who just want to copy a pre-existing sound (which means they will always be late to the party).

Honestly, I wouldn’t want to spend time teaching that… But unfortunately for the good fellas at SA, it’s what sells.
