Why I hate Nexus
willidaniel (05/03/2011)
i would say the most important thing is to really learn ATTACK DECAY SUSTAIN and RELEASE.
And these are your words. If you wanted to say that this was the place to start, then say it. Don’t say its the most important thing.

I’m serious… learn these first!!! cause after you pick the wave form, voices and detune to your liking these will be the next parameters you will need to know on Sylenth or any other synth.

How’s that Howie??? Are you choosing parts to read now???

Lets not argue man lets try to help this guy by getting him out of using those presets! I’ve read a lot of your posts and I know you know a lot about music design. Rather than me and you going at it why don’t you throw something his way or my way that will better our music!!

Cool??

I’m just giving my opinion. You’re the one that is all argumentative.

Yes learn ADSR.

Signal flow is what you will spend the rest of your synthesis life trying to wrap your head around. Take it from someone who is building a modular synth.

whatever

You mad because I don’t agree? I love a good debate!
Salvation (05/03/2011)… I just don’t like Nexus since its a Rompler and not a “synth” Reason I am moving away from nexus is 2 things. 1 its a Rompler with pre-made sounds…
I know this is going to open a hornet’s nest, but SO WHAT if it’s a Rompler? I mean really, if it has sounds that inspire you to make music, what’s the big deal?

It’s kinda like saying people who play the piano aren’t real musicians because it only has ONE sound…seriously, if you enjoy being a sound designer that’s great, but you don’t have to cut down the tree, smelt the iron, build your own sound board, and inlay the ebony and ivories to make good music.

No one ever heard of the Steinway’s hit single (or Dave Smith for that matter)…even though they made some amazing instruments.

Just saying…enough with the Rompler hating already.

no your right howie!! seriously you are right!!! signal flow is the most important thing after you’ve learned the basics(waveforms)(ADSR)The very basics!

the guy who stared this thread (salvation) sounded like he was in the beginner stages of making sounds and trying to get out if using presets from Nexus and not to sure about a real synth that’s why I recommended learning ADSR first when you get one. You said that you 100% disagree!!! not that what you wrote wasn’t right it just seemed a little advanced for what what he was saying and what i was trying to tell him. mods and routing capabilities from some one just coming off a rompler!!

let’s just say i wasn’t too surprised when you said that your building a modular synth

you got the “whatever” comment from your argumentative comment

now lets put this to rest yet again!! your building a synth very cool!! what stage are you in?? are going to try and market it?? what genre will your synth lean towards??

BTW, how do you like Vanguard? (After Nexus2, I opted to get Rob Papen’s Predator instead since there was a deal when I joined SonicAcademy).

just got it yesterday but it’s certainly yielding some great possibilities. great synth for the money!! total bargain!!! right in the middle of working on track. working on the break right now so i haven’t had to much time to mess with it

trance is my thing so nexus2 is a no brainer. their mailing the usb e licenser or something like that with a dvd. is it hard to install? i don’t think it will be problem but it does look a little tricky?

i’ve been on a synth buying frenzy as of late!!!

is predator yielding some good sounds???

Hey Will… I just meant that ADSR is not the most important thing, however, it is very important. In the modular world, and envelope generator (ADSR) can be routed anywhere. So I guess the ADSR would include the signal flow aspect.

My modular is aimed at creating some really gnarly sounds. I would like to create some harsher tones. Right now, I have 2 VCF’s, 2 VCO’s, 1 EG, 1 Quad LFO, and a multiple and a couple mixers. I have an overdrive made by Oakley too. So its about 1/3rd full. Its coming along though.

this might be off the topic a little bit but i was kind of curious about you wrote in the ableton 9 thread.

i too am wondering about what’s going to be new in ableton 9.

you wrote that it will have a 64 bit support. does this mean more cpu usage??

No the eLicenser is easy to install…be sure to downlown the latest version from their website if you’re running Snow Leopard:

http://www.elicenser.net/en/latest_downloads.html

The one on that comes with the app is out of date.

I forgot my dongle once and Ableton crashed evertime I opened a track with Nexus on it–I suggest bouncing/freezing an audio version (to use in Simpler) if you travel around a lot.

I can answer this question because it is easy!

In layman terms…

Ableton 8 is only a 32bit application. This means that the application data pipeline that sends data to the CPU can only accept 32bits at a time. A 64bit application utilizes a 64bit pipeline that sends data to the CPU and accepts 64bits at a time.

So basically a 64bit application uses a bigger data pipeline to the CPU which allows for bigger & faster calculations from the CPU, which leads to higher performance…

People will often confuse the memory consumption of a 32 bit operating system vs 64bit…

To clarify… a 32bit OS like windows XP can only use up to 4 gigs of RAM in the pc.

a 64bit OS like Windows 7 can use up to 16gigs of RAM in the pc.

The RAM benefit is the big thing for switching to a 64bit OS. More ram = faster computer.

BUT… when referring to 64bit applications versus 32bit… They are talking about the data pipeline between the application and the CPU.

Hope that helps!

yeah, what he said.

When using Nexus “CORDS” seem so phat that I cant mix them to fit the mix no matter how hard I try . I went on Trance.FM last night and must say that station sounds awful on my Studio monitors - everything seems extremely “Airy” Cant even hear the kicks on most of the trance tracks …

When I add synths everything starts to feel Airy to the point , where all sounds feel disrupted …

lets say I add pluck with kick they sound mint together but once I add synths that tightness Gradually ceases to exist …

I cut the low end - I look at both Sounds in a graphic Eq to pin point conflicting sounds , Pan . I will also try and lower volume if need be .

PS thanks for all the tips !!

Do you find your music sounds better in Live 8?

I hate Nexus because it’s full of trance presets

I made this loop in 10 mins but would like a few feedbacks on where I was going wrong with the mix ? … SoundCloud - Hear the world’s sounds
