Am I the only one who isn’t sold on the whole ‘3D’ fad? Hope it dies a death just like it did in the 80’s so we can get back to watching movies at the cinema properly again!

110% agree with you Roben - it costs something like 4 times the cost to film something in 3D and in my opinion no way improves the content of the film - sure my 10 year old loves it but since 2010 was in my opinion one of the worst years for hollywood movies they seem to be spending their money on technology rather than a decent script and storyline

Saying that and I know its not everyones cup of tea but during the summer I was invited to a special screening of a Test match in 3D and it was quite spectacular - so I do see its potential in the sports arena - will I be rushing out and buying a 3D TV, I think not

Have you actually sat down a watched it?  I mean the home 3DTVs?

I admit I am such a tech geek that I spend all my hard earned on gadgets.  I bought a 3D Samsung 40" LED TV back in October.  The LED quality is amazing, my last ‘HD’ tv wasn’t the full 1080p either so for me the upgrade was amazing!

The problem I see this time with 3D world is that is bloody expensive!!  To actually get 3D you need to replace all of your existing equipment!  I had to get a 3D blu-ray player to experience HD 3D.  You can’t just put a 3D dvd in any player.  Don’t even get me started on the HDMI cables!!  You can’t even use your existing cables - the transfer rate isn’t high enough for a 3D picture! These cables are £100 a time and you need two!  One for the 3D blu-ray player and one for your sky HD box!  (if you have the sky world package!)

With all that said, if you have the cash it is a truely amazing experience.  I don’t think it’s going to go away this time.  However, it will take some time for people to part with their cash if you’re not a tech geek like me!

Not forgetting that most, if not all, home set ups also require you to buy 3D specs. For a family of four that’s a lot more expense on top. AND how long will it be before little Johnny breaks a pair of the specs and they need replacing.

It’s a gimmick.

Yep - £60 a pop!  Defo not a toy for kids!

Or you could nick them from the cinema next time you go?

Anyways they’ve already developed 3d without the need for specs in Japan, admittedly only 14" i think it is, but it’s a start and will only dramatically improve in this year alone, so buying 3d tv now is just a waste of money.

No you can’t do that.  99% of the 3DTVs you can buy for home use need to have something called “Active” glasses whereas the cinema screens use “Passive” glasses.  They say that the experience is better with Active glasses but the reason cinemas don’t use active is becuase of the cost of glasses!

Without going into too much detail the difference is, one needs a battery to operate (Active) the other doesn’t.

There is a new nintendo ds coming out this year called the nintendo 3ds - see what they did there?! FFS!

Anyway, it might well work with 13/14" screens but to get anywhere need what we, the consumer, expects i.e 37", 40",42" 50" it will be a long time before we get 3D in our homes without glasses.  So buying now wouldn’t be a complete waste of money if that’s what you wanted.

As you say, it’s taken since the 80s to get this far - to get as far as a 40" tv without glasses will probably take as long again.

my mrs wont shut up about it, the 3D tv’s with powered polarized 3d glasses make you feel like your in the screen according to her. she had a go in currys and now wants me to buy one… she’ll be waiting a while! want my virus ti2 first!

Haha yeah it does make you feel like that.

I’d defo buy her one first, think how much free time it’ll give you in the studio!  Granted the TI will have to wait a little :stuck_out_tongue:

no i think its a big waste of time too. i do laugh at the things you hear about it anyway, the best one so far was in Comet (electrical store) where a chav girl said to a lad “apparently “they” are working on a 3d tv thats so good you can see the picture beside your head and even behind you”

She’s clearly an idiot

That’s true init yeah?

I went to see Tron in 3D on Monday, and I think it improved the experience over all, but I was far from blown away by it.

According to my twitter stream today though lots of hardware coming out this year very much in a 3D vein.

It seems like everyone is pushing it. For me, it’s all about unison. Once all the big companies plump for the same system, and make it glasses-less it’ll get better.

Then any BluRay can work with any telly and any film will work on whatever etc. Then the specification and technology can improve in the same direction and faster.

i don’t think that tron did anything special in 3d at All. avatar was kinda cool because it was a first kinda thing…

other then that from now on I am going to see all my movies in 2d when I go to the theater. I hate wearing the glasses.
