I have started using Nerve within ableton, its a great drum machine and is so easy to use.
However; when i make a midi clip, and then duplicate it down in the session view to add notes, to get a progression of sounds, it simply adds the extra notes to the first clip.
The manual mentions using it within a host, and tells you to use the midi editor within the host, much as you would any plugin. The problem is the notes don’t appear in the midi editor in ableton at all. The GUI does, and yopu can play around with all its automation and settings, but individual patterns seem more tricky.
Nerve has its own map of beats and notes, and its own sequencer which I guess I could figure out how to use, but that seems as though I would have to make the whole drum track individually, without previewing any other sounds, and then record the whole thing to an audio track, and then build the track around it.
Without using the Nerve sequencer, I can make different patterns, simply copy and paste each pattern to a new scene in Nerve, but then I can’t figure out how to direct those to the relevant midi clip in ableton…did that make sense?
I can use it by recording the clips into the arrangement view, and then add automation such as volume sweeps, so I can introduce the whole pattern incrementally or suddenly. I’m not looking for that though, I am trying to keep a beat going but add elements to it throughout the track progression…any ideas/advice please?
Hmm im not totally sure what your problem is.
does nerve work the same way as drum racks?
It has a seperate screen for each drum pad, so when you highlight say a kick, you then enter the beat position and velocity across the screen (defaulted to 4 beats) then you highlight the snare or whatever, get a new blank screen for the same loop, and input again. in this way you build up a pattern, so it plays all beats for each pad on a loop. It then has blocks 1 to 8 and blocks a-z, Im assuming you use these to make different clips or loops in the same you would in ableton. My issue is trying to get ableton and nerve working to play each loop in different midi clips in ableton? so i can copy and paste each time, and add like my hats or cymbals progressively.
Also things like long flowing drum build-ups and stuff, again I can do these by recording several bars and adjust the volume with automation, but I cant edit individual beats.
The Nerve manual just states that you treat it as you would any other plug in and use the host midi editor, but when I do, there are no assigned keys or even midi notes in there…even though the beat is playing. It sounds like mid issue, (I have ableton set to my novation 25SL) but I don’t get this problem with any other things such as ana or sylenth
Did that make more sense?
