A good compression

Desperado 4 a gud compressor guys!

Any suggestions?

Heard the fab filter 1 is quite gud. Any other gud 1s out there?

Any of the waves stuff maybe?

Fabfilter one is pretty cool

Its also way too expensive for what it does really. Abletons built in one is fantastic IMO.

Dont get me wrong FabFilters is great but the only way I would get it is if I was going for the Pro bundle to get the Pro-Q which is where FabFilter shines.

Compressors are a weird one for me, I personally only use Abletons compressor (excluding on the master) but I have read in places that using different compressors for different roles is essential. Not entirely sure what they mean there? Only other compressor I use is the one built into iZotopes Ozone but thats only cause its already there with the rest of the mastering package.

Can someone enlighten me on this different compressors for different roles thing? Sorry for asking a different question on your thread BTW :frowning:

The Ableton compressor is three compressors built into one unit. A fast, lower quality which is good for side chaining. A slower but transparent compressor great for mixing and a vintage stye for NY compression.

Maybe you should explain what it is you are looking for from a new compressor or what you find the Ableton one doesn’t do well, it might make it easier to make a suggestion.

TBH with ya, i dont even know myself. I just think abletons is pretty poop and only good for sidechaining. I may be wrong tho and it is a decent compressor but im just not feelin it on most things so i was just hoping to get a few ideas for other compressors and maybe try a few demos

Even though I have the fabfilter one which i got for half price a while back - I still use Lives one most of the time

I think trying the demos out is a good idea. I think if you spend a lot of money on a compressor without an idea of what you are looking for, you will be disappointed because the differences can be subtle.

I have the Pro-C and the PSP Master Comp, I like both and use them (but not as much as I use the Ableton compressor).

These are some things I keep in mind when I use the Ablton compressor - I would welcome correction from anyone more knowledgable than me.

FF1 - Use this for when a fast attack is needed (such as side-chain)

FF2 - Better quality than FF1, but don’t use it with a fast attack because it clicks. But with a slow attack it is very good. The “Mix gel” preset is great, I love it - does exactly what it claims to.

FB - This is modeled on classic hardware (apparently). The 1976 preset is also very good, I guess it is meant to sound like an 1176LN. Stick it on a send.

A bowel of sugar? That really is an unpleasant thought. :hehe:

thanks 4 the tip guys

Check out the tubetech cl 1b. It sounds fantastic.

wow…

that looks the bollocks!

depends on what your using it for imo. I like to use waves rcompressor on leads and plucks and pads. for drums I’ll use abletons built in compressor, however I’ve got got just got Voxengo Marquis Compressor for kicks mainly which I’m looking forward to trying tomorrow. I’m sure the tubetech cl 1b is vgood too, must try it sometime.

i’ve used the waves rcompressor wayne and it duznt seem to do anything…:doze:

or am i missing something

well that is strange! are you using it right? at the top of the compressor turn all the yellow lights to blue (off) and pull down the ratio to about -2 ish, change your attack and release to what yout looking for then pull down the threashold and up the gain to compensate. then tweak all of the above more depending on what your looking for.

ie I like my leads to pull through my mix and the reverb to come out so use the attack and release to do this.

remember there is no auto make up gain so you need to use the gain control. Play around with it, it is a good compressor once you figure it out.

cheers wayne. guna check it out again tmoro. i’ve totally missed the blue switch thing so it cud be that

yeah I think when they are yellow it tries to do things in some kinda semi auto mode which isnt good. I didnt like it until I figured that out.

Btw you also shouldnt use a compressor cos we might say its good, like our ears may be different to yours, just give everything a blast and see what you like best…

yeah i know that!

im asking coz there are so many good ones out there.

need to narrow the field down then try a few demos out
