[Ableton] Automating Channel Faders vs. Utility Gain

So after watching a number of tutorials, I have run across something that I’m a little confused on.

I see Phil automating a channel’s volume level within Ableton Live and mentioning how confusing or difficult it becomes to try and do levels for a track near the end of production.

I’ve always been taught and have always used the Utility tool and automated the gain for a particular channel, which allows me to retain my channel’s volume control without losing any automation.

Is there an advantage to automating the channel faders themselves as opposed to the Utility gain?

No. Using a utility device is a much better solution. The only problem with the utility device is that it only goes to -35db, but for smaller volume adjustments it shouldn’t be an issue.
