Hi guys just looking for some advice.
I know we did the Logic vs Ableton Live debate a while back and the general consensus was logic perhaps had the edge? …possibly due to the fact that it was running under a better OS amongst other things but I’d like to ask those who have used both live8 and Cubase5 which is the better environment in your opinion and why.?
The online tutorials I’ve seen made cubase look really clumsy in comparison to Live to but maybe i am overlooking something?
I am not worried about inbuilt plugs since if there’s something in Live that falls short I can replace it with external vst/i’s etc.
I am mainly interested in workflow and ease of use and anything I may have overlooked that could sway the choice.
I am only asking because a switch in host requires a hell of a lot of time and effort to get to grips with and although I have some time I don’t really want to end up thinking why did I bother.
Thanks in advance.
Well it really comes down to which you prefer and your own personal thoughts on work flow etc. For instance, some people swear by Reason, some Logic, others Fruityloops.
I used to be a cubase user but for me, moving to Live was the best thing i ever did, find it much easier and better to work with. But then there are those out there who’d rather cubase.
Each to their own mate and only YOU can answer your own question.
I think the only reason cubase has such a large user base is because of H2O and AiR. steinberg reported that for every one legal copy of cubase installed there are 5 illegal copies.
to be fair every mag or review that i’ve read claim it to be great but still falling behind almost every other DAW on the market.
My opinion is that if you are a pc only user then go for Cakewalk & Live, If you are a mac only user go for Logic & Live and if you are both pc and mac user Cubase & live. imo it’s all about choosing the right software for your situation
What about Pro Tools? Like Live 8, it works great on Mac and PC.
Pro Tools? yak!
Been thinking about this one a bit myself recently. Using Live atm & really like it.
Why / how do you use two DAWs eg live + logic?
Is it just for the extra / better plugins in Logic or is there something else Logic gives you that Live doesn’t? Is it live to sketch things out and logic to sort it all out and polish it all up?
the better plug-ins are in logic so if i’ve created something in live i would usually bounce down the separate audio and midi lanes and import them to logic to get a much tighter and nicer polished mix.
although some people just rewire, i don’t like to do that and others just use live or reason as a sketch pad
You dont have to use two DAW’s though, some people do, some people don’t. It’s up to the individual. It’s a lot of money to spend as well when each DAW is capable of being more than enough to do everything you need it to do anyways.

completely agree with you roben, i have four but i currently only use ableton. i am a big logic fan but ableton is much easier to learn and very quick for getting ideas going and also has some great feature for guys that don’t play keyboard to well.
i have cubase le or studio can’t remember now lol, its in a box in the loft collecting dust. i also have reason installed on my machine because i still like to play around with it, its a great program and you can get some real unique sounds from the synths.
I finally got to see Live used as a production tool at the weekend and for sheer simpllicity of use and ultra quick turnaround of ideas, I can say without question that Ableton is definitely the way to go.
I’d agree. Ableton all the way for ease of use compared to others.
Thanks for the replys dudes.
I really do take on the advice given here and have decided to concentrate on Ableton Live.
I had a gut feeling that Live was good enough I just needed to hear it again.
i had cubase 4 and it was my first version, it was a disaster! waste of money, lost hrs and hrs of time waiting for bug fixes, never had 2 projects working the same… Live8 all the way! On the cubase forum back then, people who were using cubase in there studios, and getting paid to produce for bands etc were going nuts and saying…“i just bought a mac”! stay away is what i say.
i tried reason for awhile but found live was much better, easier to use and creativity wise
I find Live 10x better than Cubase. So much more user friendly and way more fun to work with.
Live 8.
