Acoustic Foam

I’ve got a full room pack of acoustic foam tiles and basstraps arriving from Auralex later today and I have to say I’m like a kid on Christmas eve, can’t wait to get it all up and the room sounding good. My misses thinks I’m a sad old man, she just doesn’t understand!

I understand Jimmy. I understand!

Thank you for your kind words! haha

We got your back bro! tell the missis that this gives you the same pleasure for you as shoe shopping does for here. She will get it then(hopefully):w00t:

Although from experience, that usually means that you’ll end up having to buy her some new shoes!br
br
But i guess that’s a small price to pay to get what you want!

Ha Ha, every time I buy her a mulberry handbag, I can blow a load more money on production equipment, that’s my tact. I don’t think she’ll ever understand though.

I feel your pain mate.br
br
I’m just about to move in with my girlfriend, and am insisting on that second bedroom to use purely as my studio.br
br
She just doesn’t get it.br
br
I’ve agreed to pay all the extra cost of having the 2nd bedroom, but she still doesn’t get it!br
br
She’s like ‘can’t you just chuck away some of this stuff’?br
br
I’m like - ‘babes, i will chuck away you before i chuck away any of my beloved production gear’.br
br
I think she thought i was kind of joking. But i wasn’t!br
br
In summary, they just don’t get it do they!!!

Ha Ha, I told my other half it was the only thing I enjoy in life the other day, that didn’t go down well! br
br
I’ve just blown a load of money having the loft done, boarded, plastered, sound proofed the floor, ordered this acoustic treatment.br
br
All this to make more space for the new baby, I’m a thoughtful dad! What a selfless act…

I’ve gotta go down the same road myself mate. Although at the moment I’ve agreed to a studio/playroom for the little one. As I dont really need all the space in that big room, just need enough to allow the sound to travel a bit, rather than being in a box room (now known as the nursery)

I would like to go for the man cave in the back garden route at some point, so I can really squirrel myself away, but need to satisfy the misses with an extension first, nothing is free.

Ive been working first at my mums then out of a tiny box room in a rental while my house is being renovated and man cave (sonic Studios) are being built.br
br
have built 2 rooms at the bottom of the garden… cant wait to get in and start getting acoustic treatments up.br
br
we’ve have a 3 month old baby who is dictating when i can work at the minute… she is beautiful but im so incredibly frustrated not being able to make noise i feel sometimes like i might explode.:stuck_out_tongue:

Although having said that, have you pushed the ‘it’s good to get babies into music at a very early age as it helps them develop’ arguement?br
br
As far as i know this is not true, but it sounds like it might be.br
br
If you pitch this well, you might be able to convince her to let you bang out 140bpm trance whilst the baby’s trying to sleep?br
br
Worth a shot?

when she was like 5-6 weeks old… she would only go to sleep listening to trance. think it was all the freqs in the saw pads she liked… she prefers the hoover stuff.br
br
now she will only sleep to hair dryer sounds.br
br

Some of the modern EDM stuff sounds a bit like a hair dryer!

I get the feeling when the new born arrives I’m going to have at least 3 months of no production, which is going to annoy the hell out of me.br
br
I started putting the foam up last night, it’s taking a lot longer than expected, measuring everything to get them positioned correctly, hopefully finish it off tonight.br
br

Do you have bass traps Jimmy?br
br
I put up some standard foam on the walls to absorb high and mid frequencies (think it is the 4 inch thick stuff), but wish i invested more time trying to sort out the bass frequencies. Although i gather it’s harder to deal with the bass, as the foam has to be alot thinker etc.br
br
Phil i remember you said that there’s a tutorial showing you how to make your own though, i’ll have to get on this one soon!

Hi David, yeah I’ve got 8 of these…br

br
If you go on Auralex’s website you can actually send them your room dimensions and shape and they will send you what they think the best treatment for the room is. They probably go a bit over board so you buy more stuff, but I just went with it.br
br
It’s a no obligation, free service…

Yeah i bought the Auralex stuff as well, but the bass traps are really expensive, obviously because they have to use so much more material than the thin absorbers for mid and high frequencies.br
br
You must have spent alot of money on those bad boys!

It wasn’t too bad, total spend was £380 on 8 bass traps and 36 1x1ft tiles.br
br
2 bass traps take up the same amount of material as 18 of the square panelsbr

That is literally one of the most amusing things I’ve read on here!
