I’ve just gone and bought an Akai LPD8 and was wondering if anyone here uses one with Ableton?
I’ve not had a go at installing it yet as im at work at the moment but was wondering…
A. If its fairly easy to do? As i’ve never mapped any midi devices in Ableton before. I’ve only been using it for a few weeks and have so far only used a mouse & keyboard to control it.
B. I may be being slightly naive here but is there a preset that makes it automatically work with Ableton? As it all sounds quite confusing to me at the moment.
howiegroove (03/03/2010)
yeah dude, mapping controls in ableton is a snap. click the midi button at the top right and click away!
Close when done… :D
Hi mate, you make it sound so easy! I i tried this last night but im having problems with it, probably (definitely) due to my lack of knowledge with Ableton and in midi mapping etc.
I installed the LPD8 drivers and installed the Ableton Impulse preset, all fine and dandy. The pads work with Imulse fine and I can assign the knobs to various controls within Impulse e.g volume, pan etc. However when i open a new live set none of these settings have been saved?!?
But thats as far as I’ve managed to get. I was hoping I’d be able to use the pads to play notes in other instruments such as Simpler or Operator, but I have absolutley no idea how to do this. When I open another instrument and assign the knobs to different controls it wipes out the ones that I’ve set in Impulse.
Oh and forgot to say. If anyone knows how to change the velocity / sensitivity settings that’d be great. I only seem to be able to get really quiet or really loud noises, probably due to my ham fisted drumming technique!
look at the bottom right of the picture. turn it up to about 70%. this is on both simpler, drum racks, and impulse, although I NEVER touch impulse. Ever.
Smart arse ;). Its not so much a problem with mapping in Ableton its more to do with the editor software that comes with the pads, as I dont really have any idea how to use it.
But thanks for the velocity tip, thats really helpful.
Just out of curiosity, why do you never use Impulse?

Because I feel that Impulse doesnt play the sound the same way as a sampler does (or Simpler). It does something to the sound. It basically shortcuts things a bit. On top of that, you have alot less control over each individual sound.
