I started university this year and i have been dj’ing techno house and minimal for the past 4/5 months in my spare time. I’m now wanting to start making my own music to pop in to my mixes so there is somewhat of a mark of my own within the mix.
I have a few questions that i’m hoping the community could answer for me so i can get on the right track to start producing.
What program should i use, there are so many people telling me to get this and that, i don’t know where i stand.
What are some good addons i can get to help my music sound authentic.
Where can i find some good tutorials for beginners and for making minimal/tech house. (besides Sonic Academy)
i personally use ableton and have found it to be better for me than other DAW’s. If you want more tutorials check out youtube, there is a lot of content covering whatever DAW you choose, good luck in your future djing and productions

Hey bro, welcome to the site. I’ve listed my opinions/answers to your questions below.
What program should i use, there are so many people telling me to get this and that, i don’t know where i stand.
Ableton. If you don’t, you’re not with the “in” crowd.
In all honesty, you should use whatever it is that you have the most fun making music with. You will find that most of the members of this forum are Ableton users.
What are some good addons i can get to help my music sound authentic.
You can make authentic sounding music with whats included with Ableton Live/Suite. In all honesty, thats all you really need. But, there are plugins out there that will help you get a different sound and that might sound more “analog”. I’m a fan of DCAM Synth Squad for a soft synth, PSP and Sonalksis for EQ’s, Classik for reverbs, and lots of PSP Vintage Warmer.

Youtube. However, you will not find the quality and technique anywhere else. You have to remember, that the people making the tutorials, are released artists and are amazing at production. They make a living at this too. You will find tidbits here and there, but this is the most comprehensive tutorial base on the internet IMO. It did for me, and should for most anyone put them on the fast track to improving your music.

Yeah, have fun making music. Did I mention PSP Vintage Warmer?
Hope this helps. Ask questions, we are all here to help out one another.
I went out and got a demo of ableton live today that my friend had, Just going to have a play about and look at some of the basic stuff you offer. Ill keep you posted
Ableton all the way! I was an avid cubase user before, since the switch i’ve never looked back.
You may also feel like using it for DJing in the future, however personally CDJ’s are still where it’s at for me
As for synths, well there is more synths out there than you can wave a stick at. Basically, dont get into the trap of collecting loads. Get 1 / 2 and practice as much as possible with it till you become pro at it. You’ll find it better in the long run.
Ableton has some of it’s own instruments like Operator, which is really good!
what ever program you feel comfortable with, no one can or should tell you what to use, get some demo’s and start having a play.
the best thing to add to your sound is a good set of ears, the heart for making music and a solid groove. these things will all come with time.
pointblank but the course is over £2000 by the time you finish paying your fee’s
don’t try to learn everything, you only need to know some things trying to learn to much in one go will throw off your creativity. if you want something then just ask a direct question and im sure the guys at SA will try to help you out.
Don’t bother with anywhere else bro, the ONLY site that even comes close to matching SA’s standard is Faderpro. However even they don’t offer the same value for money that SA does, plus i find that the way that Phil, Bryan etc explain things is much easier to follow.
Get yourself a Computer Music magazine from WH Smiths, it comes with loads of wicked software and samples on the supplied DVD. Also reguarly get Future Music as that also comes with loads of sound and samples on the supplied DVD. Both magazines also come with big name producer tutorial/interviews. (Although i say tutorial, it’s VERY limited and is more of a ‘them telling you what they did in their track’)
What do you do with loops, slice them and use the different sounds within the loop? or can you just buy basic samples from there like hi hats etc etc etc
