Yes, but those 20,000 students scraping pennies together for beans and toast still somehow manage to have iPads and expensive cell phones…
jjdejong0 (01/05/2011)
Ok but lets get one thing straight. I hate the governments, I hate royal families and I definately hate bankers. However id rather look out for no1, in the western civilised world mass protests and demonstrations are just a waste of the participants energy and time. Look at the student protests as a prime example. I just think theres no point, we CANT win. Even if we are led to believe in a victory we will be bitch slapped in some other sly way. Do you really think people with average to small incomes can stand up to organizations and governments with billions at their disposel. So my argument is instead of wasting your time on a battle you cant win, doesnt it make more sense to make money yourself and take care of you and yours. The fact is money = power. I also believe one multi millionaire could potentially make more of an impact than 20,000 students scraping pennies together for beans on toast…

Wether you think its fair, or acceptable is a whole other argument but its sadly the harsh truth.
Jan… Thats exactly the thing we’re talking about.

You are proving our point here.
Subject 1 (30/04/2011)
There are many bands who stand up for a purpose or movement but they never reach many people due to the media pumping this linear crap to us we are becoming so linear with this mainstream stuff that music with a purpose never sees the light of day…people don’t look for good music they simply turn on their radio and listen to the crap they’re playing…
that sums it up perfectly.

I don’t agree on the fact that we can’t win. The need isn’t there. That’s it. Look at the protests in Egypt, Tunisia, etc. There was a huge need to change things. Protests wouldn’t stop before it actually changed.

In western europe everyone is actually pretty satisfied with how things work. The majority of the people just hasn’t reached their breaking point.
ICN (30/04/2011)
Watching the Royal Wedding the other day got me thinking about The Sex Pistols & the Queens Jubilee back in the 1970’s.
Ok, maybe it’s me, but exactly which part of the Royal wedding reminded you of the Sex Pistols–The Queen’s yellow frock or the freaky minister with the eyebrows like a barn owl?

Eh… Neither :stuck_out_tongue:

Since I am watching the series of Treme (don’t ask me how  ) I was also thinking that many aspects of Jazz has attitude too - but not a Jazz nut myself but happy to spend a hot summer afternoon outside listening to some live improv

The Brazilians Jazz / Art protest in the 60’s / 70’s against the dictatorship.

Later… Miles Davis’ protest against sobriety

Jazz was underground in Nazi Germany too. A lot of the Jazz Guys were sent to the camps.
ICN (30/04/2011)
Maybe its me… But what do DJ’s / Producers do to bring about positive social change?

Its all pretty selfish, for the most part, isnt it?!

Just playing devils advocate here

I dont think they do much, because its not cool… and people dont listen / want to hear.
I think that’s why I really like Gareth Emery and Above & Beyond’s Oceanlab On a good day…they’re giving back to the community and promoting urban renewal by donating to http://georgiastreetgarden.blogspot.com, http://pri-de.net/board, http://urbanfarming.org and http://hantzfarmsdetroit.com

As for students having expensive things like ipads and phones etc, thank mommy and daddy AND a nice chunk of debt…

Any locals in the Philadelphia region could say The Dead Milkmen were very anti government/ social punk from the 80’s. They just released a new album as well.

I especially like the song about not trusting the happy(Meaningless Upbeat Hppy Song).

Forgot to add this one to the list the other day.

I still think that protest music needs lyrics in it if it’s going to be effective in getting the message across
