aslo why would i want to chop up a sample i dont understand why would i do this
First question - you can’t in Ableton nativley. Audio is music data, MIDI is note data (ie note presses on a piano and velocity etc etc).
The closest I’ve found to converting back to MIDI is using a VST called Waves Tune Stereo or Melodyne (thanks Roben). Pump the Audio file through that and it trys to plot out the MIDI notes. It won’t export the invividual samples for you and it’s not very good for drum loops but it’s the closest I’ve found.
Second Question - maybe you wouldn’t. Me personally, I tweak pitches in bass/vocal loops to fit in with the track. I also tweak drum loops to add a bit of variation to them. Sometimes you don’t have the luxury of being able to do it in MIDI (ie you download the loop) you have to do it this way… I personally prefer to work with MIDI a lot of the time, as it gives you more flexibility, but it hammers your CPU. Audio however doesn’t.
