do you need an audio interface or is that just a stupid question, also if you do need one is this were my monitors would connect plz help thank you
You can use your computers build in sound card but your far better off with an audio interface, I use E-mu 1820m with Mackie HR824 monitors connected to this.
You usually need an audio interface if you’re connecting a mic or some hardware synths/midis. However more often than not now they come with USB connections and their own in built audio interface. For instance my midi keyboard has no need for a audio interface.
Most sound cards like the audiophile are professional choices that eradicate the need for one.
Do you need one? More often than not… no not really.
My set up:
2 x Alesis M1 mk 2 Active speakers connect into
Audiophile 2496 soundcard (can pick one up for about £40 now)
CME VX6 Midi Keyboard connects into one of my USB ports.
My mic has it’s own in built soundcard and hard drive as it’s one that i can take out in the field, it just connects via usb and i can transfer my recordings much like i would when transfering files from a USB stick.
But i’m going to get a good studio mic and thats when i’ll actually need an audio interface.
Check with your hardware or hardware your looking to get as to whether you’ll know if you’ll need a AI. No point wasting your money if you dont end up actually needing one.
Basically how in understand it is if your gonna be using hardware, mic’s and analog desk for your project you will really wanna be buying a card with the best AD converters, you’ll also want a desk with good signal to noise ratio.
so basically speaking if you wanna go down ^ that route at some point, your best off avoiding M-audio, Behringer and some of the other Audio interfaces.
on the other hand if you are gonna be creating everything in the box, basically never leaving your pc/mac during production & processing stages then basically any half decent sound card will be fine as your music will only really ever be a series of 0’s and 1’s
thats my understanding anyway, please someone correct me if im wrong
