Hi Guys,
I have a pair of KRK Rockit 6 connected with RCA’s to a cheap Beringher USB soundcard.
A friend told me that to get the best of my monitors i shoul have a soundcard with XLR connectors. Is this true?
Please help me find the best buy sound card (maximum 300$) with XLR connectors for my home use.
Thanks,
XLR are not necessarily better audio quality than RCA, they both have advantages and disadvantages. XLR are balanced and so are less likely to suffer from external noise, this is why they are used for long cable runs or in situations where there is a high chance of interference. The disadvantage with XLR is you need to have additional circuits on each end to do the balancing and every circuit adds a tiny amount of noise.
RCA can suffer from external noise, partially on longer cable runs, but it has a more direct path.
One thing to note is there have been a lot of reports on this forum about the KRK having a hum when using RCA that isn’t there with XLR - I think this is more to do with the internal design of the KRK monitors than a property of the cables. If you have this problem you should upgrade your audio interface.
I don’t know your interface, but if it isn’t very good you will notice more of an improvement through a better DAC than you will with the cables (assuming you don’t have the problem I mentioned).
The Focusrite Saffire 6 is really good.
if you run mac i would suggest appogie brand new there about 500 but check out ebay for used ones.
i have krk rokit 5’s and i use 1/4 jacks (also balanced) i have a yamaha audiogram3
i find it very good if u just wanna do things in the box. it does have inputs i have my mic and a turntable hooked up 2 it.
it only cost me £85 not sure what that is in usd;)
Andy
Thanks Ant,
Yes I am having a hum. It is a cheap Beringher audio interface.
The Focusrite Saffire 6 is just what i was thinking about. So you think it should solve my problem with the hum?
Thanks,

Yeah, I think it will sort out the hum. The Saffire 6 is an excellent sounding interface for that kind of cash.
EvelynArado (14/12/2011)
I think an external sound card/interface is exactly what you need. I recommend something like the M-audio FastTrack, which plugs in to your USB port and is perfect for a laptop. You can plug any kind of microphone into it. Speaking of mics, you asked about that too. It depends on what you want to record, but to get you started I’d pick up a USB mic - Samson CO1U, which you can get at Best Buy! It’s about $100. Failing that, the Samson Q1U is a great alternative for about $49 (also available at Best Buy).
This is just SPAM.
