Anybody got any tips on how to make big crash sounds? Sick of flicking through sample libraries trying to find one that fits my track. How do you get that big professional sounding smash? Any vst’s that I should look at? Cheers
Think the big crashes are simply crashes with numerous effects. Try layering a few crashes on top of each other. Filter off the low end. Add a reverb with a long tail. Or even better, a few different reverbs. One short and one long. Add a bit of delay. And a bit of distortion.
And don’t forget to add the compression. To boost the sound a bit.
Cheers mate, I’ll give that a try
Vengeance has some great samples in club sounds 3 called impact hits or reverb kicks or something. Another nice thing to add to your crash is a little kick and a short burst of filtered white noise.
Also lotsa reverb and a bit of delay and mabey a little fx noise layered on top as well. That should keep ya busy for a while lol.
Agreed. Also, the main room house tutorial has a few good chapters on how to tweak crashes to ur liking, if u haven’t checked that out yet
I’ve been layering stuff recently - exact same one shot an octave down… or wherever sounds good. Add more if you want.
Gives extra depth.
So try that with the crash. Works for Rides… so I’m sure it’ll be cool. Its the added lower pitch that does the trick. Y’d be there all fkn day looking for a sample in the right register. Just set the velocity in simpler or whatever & drag the volume up on the lower hit until it sounds good - then take out the lows you dont need.
the Trance tutorial (one of the earlier videos) gives a few hints. Be sure to cut the low frequencies with an auto filter then send to a return/bus track with something like a filter delay then push the feedback up pretty high. Plus send to a reverb. Might do the trick.
Cheers lads I’ll be trying all of that out, really like the ‘octave down’ tip. Gives the crash a lot more energy and ‘smash’ sounds really good
And if anyone can let me know how I can get a 3d effect on crashes i’ll be extra happy. Basically I want a front to back wash of sound - as if it’s flying over my head 180 degrees.
well, it’s not a crash - more like a collection of noise but it’s really a cool thing.

it’s an Ableton Live instrument rack which is hmm a noise machine dedicated to create all kind of noise risers / falls (whooosh) etc. The are even predifined clips you can just drag and drop to your project and you’ll have instant raising / falling noise. there are of course some settings - like you can sidechain such noise
used this in my last project and I was satisfied - very flexible thing especially if you’re bored looking for some ready whooosh sound in sample libraries.
and it’s free
