Big kickdrums (Like really big)

Hey hey, br
br
Can anyone recommend any tips to really make a kickdrum ‘phat’.br
br
I’m thinking kick drum’s that typically fill out a tracks bottom end more so in moombahton, trap, dutch house etc. br
br
If I’m making moombahton I’ll usually layer an 808 with a punchy kick and then use a multiband compressor to really pump up the low end and low mid. I’ll also eq and compress the kicks together which does make it pretty big but I find that it isn’t quite as big as this for instancebr

Can anyone recommend any other techniques? A distortion maybe on the low end?br

Yeah distortion can be your best friend here - but you have to make sure the distortion isn’t the type that actually takes away from the subby bottom end./PPSo try distortion such as tape overdrive and tube overdrive, that will retain the boom of the sub frequencies, but add a little harmonic stuff as well to dirty it up a bit.

Here is a really cool trick i use for kicks now, br
br
First find the kick drum you like the sound of, no matter how deep or anything. br
br
Then get operator, if you are using ableton, if not, any synth that can produces a constant wave. then, turn on 2 oscillators and make them independent. on one make it a plain ole sine wave and the other, i would suggest a little flavor like a slight small square wave or an 8 bit sine wave.br
br
now tune them both low. br
br
set the attack, peak, start, and sustain all the to the max. then set the delay and release all the way off or minimum.br
br
you want your synth to be making just a constant wave sound, it sounds strange, but do it. br
br
Now find the note you want, what ever one sounds good, deep, and solid, in the midi scale. br
br
Create a 4 bar loop and just make the note go constant across the whole loop so that when you play it, it is just a constant deep sound with no stop.br
br
now put a gate on the track and sidechain the gate to your kick drum, this makes it so your deep sound you just made turns on only when your kick hits. You can adjust everything on the gate: attack how fast the sound kicks in when you kick hits (usually i leave it to max speed), release will determine how long the release of your deep sound is, and hold is the sustain. just play around with all the controls until you hear what you like. br
br
This trick sounds very solid and is perfect for all different types of house music.br
br
hope you try it out,br
br
cheersbr
