Brand New to this, need advice!

hi there, I have just subscribed and still don’t know what direction to go in, I have only just started using ableton live 8 2 days ago and I have learned how to use impulse and that is it, I am stumped, even the beginner videos seem a bit complex as I have a the very basic library whereas the videos all have pre-loaded library full.

so in summary I am a complete noob at this and so far have learned how to use Impulse and thats it, need advice to move on or best video tutorial and how to load more samples and from where if possible.

thanks.

Welcome to SA!

Mmmmm Fresh Blood… I pretty much learned everything by mucking around randomly turning nobs for about 5 years and looking **** up on the internet. It was extremely inefficient. If I could do it all over again here is what I would do:

  1. Grab the sample files from a tutorial (Don’t bother actually grabbing a sample pack yet)
  2. Buy or “Buy” Sylenth1
  3. Pick a tutorial of your choice (genre)
  4. Ruthlessly work alongside it, even if you have no ***** clue what its doing, copy things almost exactly, work step by step.
  5. Do this a few times, then try rolling your own stuff that copies one of these styles. Like seriously rip it off hard, but just completely done by yourself.

This isn’t perhaps the most ‘artistic’ way to go about things, but its gonna get you up to speed extremely quickly. I wish I would have done things this way many years ago. A lot of people are proably going to tell you to just keep ‘trying new things and turn nobs’ but I say **** that… educate yourself.

Learn to imitate then Innovate. Just my two cents though.

Try the make music with Ableton Intro course if that not already what you’ve been looking it… its by far the most basic and great for beginners.

2 days!?! 2 DAYS?!? It’s a wonder you’re not a master yet

Give it time, brother/sister. Keep watching the videos until it makes sense. Ask specific questions when you get stumped there. Nobody got this overnight. Like Mr. Johnston said, the Intro video is what you want. Ableton has some introductory videos on their website, too.

Top notch advice guys, just been watching some on abletons website and is getting me going again, always knew it wasn’t an overnight thing, bang goes releasing my Christmas track, only kidding, well better get back to it and start practising if I am to get any further forward

Thanks again
