I have been getting some nice sounds out of using an 808 bass drum as a bassline. Sounds great when there is a sub but when there isn’t, it’s lacking. Has anyone got any ideas of how to bring it out in the mid range. I guess a good and obvious example of this done well is claude von stroke - who’se afraid of detroit…
techniques i’ve tried is
different bass drum sound
pitch envelope
multiband compression
From my previous experiments, splitting the frequencies takes away some of the magic
the distortion in kontakt isn’t giving me the right sound as it’s affecting too wide of frequency, I’ll try the multiband distortion route, any recommendations always appreciated
Did you see the vid of CVS showing how he makes the 808 bass?
It was in Reason… and there was possibly a Scream Distortion unit in it… so you are looking for a saturation type thing.
Also - he put each note in the bassline on its own channel & EQ’d it. Said you can get better control of it that way.
Check out you tube. There was one that the Propellorheads made for their w.site. Later Future Music or Computer Music made pretty much the exact same vid with him again.

Have you tried splitting the 808 into 3 frequency bands? Then you can apply distortion to only the mids or highs, whatever you want! Good for time based effects that you may not want on the bass frequencies as well!
if you have kontakt i assume you have reaktor… which then brings me to steampipe, a neat little multiband compressor/saturator within reaktor which i think is pretty nice. try it! cheers/ David.
You cat bring up frequencies that the sound itself doesnt have…i assume youre using a very low 808 you can add extra harmonics by distorting it i suggest driving it through a compressor too or you can find an 808 with Mids and remove the lows so they dont clash with the other 808
