Chord Question

I was watching jamies videos on melody,which are excellent.He uses a 4th note on the chords,I can Hear why hes doin this but did i miss videos on why you do it,if so could you maybe explain why its done.

I’m gonna take a stab at answering this but typically the "4th’ note you are referring to is usually the bass note played in addition to the chord. So if you think in terms of playing a piano, you have your right hand playing the "chord’ or three notes and then your left hand is playing the 4th note which is also referred to as the bassline.



if you are curious to know ‘WHY’ this is done, try playing a c major chord (C, E, G) with and with out a 4th note lowered two octaves and see if you can hear the difference.

Yes correct the bassline note,is it just a matter of trial and error when choosing the correct bass note to play.Thanks for your answer too.
