CLR / Dark Techno Production Thread

Actually we have no dishes either :stuck_out_tongue:

Ey oop everyone, great thread.

This is one of my favourites from the CLR podcasts, played by Ruskin and Lekebusch.

Was trying to get a similar - rumbly, deep, rolling - loop going the other day, wasn't easy.A steamroller loop like this is what underpins most of my favourite tracks and I'd love to get the technique nailed.

One thing that surprised me is that there seems to be a sub hit on every other beat in this tune. Almost everything I have watched/read on bass in dance production says not to put bass notes and kicks together and/or duck the bass with a sidechain.

I've stuck by that so far but never got anything to sound as sick as this. Tried the ducked reverb between kicks method to create a nice rumble but it didn't get as deep and rumbly as I'm after.

In the end I looped half a bar of this track, lowpassed it to about 80 then built my other drum and bass parts on top of that. Sounds good, but feels like cheating to some extent. Ideally be able to do it from scratch.

So, anyone got any tips on getting a gnarly Function & Jerome Sydenham bottom end?

Haven't got much to offer of my own. The one thing that's made a difference recently has been a tip from that Tommy De Clerque video - use a few different sounds to make your bass. I used to use only one patch or sample for the bass line but it's far more interesting to use a mix of low drums, bass patches and bassy verb. And don't worry too much about frequencies clashing and all that pernickity technical **** - sort it out later if you feel like the track is worth fishing, don't let it get in the way of the initial creative buzz.

Quick listen - What I’d normally do to get that kinda vibe is to get a 808 kick or tom, and shave off a fair bit of the attack to get it sitting right.

Sometimes, even drawing in a note for a beat - sitting on top of the kick, then pulling the attack back so that the kick hits, and then the bass note rises.

But you can obviously place the notes where ya want

A messing balance between the Kick envelope and the Bass envelope - to prevent overlapping, keeps it tight. EQ & sidechain if ya want.

Or - Open up a synth: Bass patch (Sine, Sub or Saw thing).

Put 1 note per beat. Or 1 longer note for 2 beats. Or on the off beat - whatever you think…

LFO then on the pitch / cutoff. Makes it roll.

Best to check that then in a frequency analyser, such as Span - to make sure that the notes you need are still hitting where you want. I usually have to transpose the physical notes down again to put them back where they should be (and have the effect).

Similar to the Tomy D.C tip - it can be cool to duplicate the synth & alter the lfo / envelopes on it to get a different groove.

I do that

Actually, after listening to it on the monitors & messing about with the loop in logic vs. a rip from YT: I think its just a kick with a long tail.

Kick is in A. I think the rhythm of the hat on top & theres a perc thing… thats what keeps it going.

Theres some sub **** in the freq’s below the kick’s freq’s, but I cant work out what it is exactly

Just what I did:

Rough but you get the idea if its like it?? Anyone any better ideas, thoughts?

Thanks for your help ICN.

I like what you did with the long kick there, haven’t done that before.

I know what you mean about the other sub that’s hard to define. Spend ages sometimes trying to separate the parts of my favourite tracks out in my head but I’ve learned you can never really discern all the individual bits that make up a finished groove. Probably best just to plough on with the experimentation and find your own way.

Someone needs to code a plugin that separates the stems of any track you run through it. Keep it just to aspiring techno producers though or it would spoil ‘the magic’ for everyone.

I know… its hard trying to dig out some of the stuff. I regularly rip stuff apart to see where stuff is hitting & work out patterns. Hate the lower stuff like that.

My Kick is always the lowest Freq’s.

There so much stuff in that track sitting below 55hz. If anyone has a sub, or larger monitors, if they could give an idea of wtf is going on down there… that would be wicked.

I’m no pro but there is more than just a bit of tail on the kick. If you listen closely there’s kind of a wobble going on down there. Listen to the percussion that comes in around 4.30 the bass is a similar lower version of that. So it will probably be the same thing just pitched down

What fkn wobble? I only ripped the first 15sec of it

Sounds good mate. I’ll check it out.

Yeah I wasn’t talking about your half arsed attempt :stuck_out_tongue:

You put more effort into explaining it by making a sound file but I think I’m right

LOL - we were talking about the same thing Mate - I ripped it from YT to see what it was like in a spectrum.

I’ll stick the other 1/2 arse up later

I’ll be waiting…

Uploading now. Y’ll have to unrar it with the other 1/2 to get a whole.

New video up for those who sent me emails!

CLR - Asymmetry

Do you have to share it in some way J?

Cant see it yet Man

Interesting. I put everyone’s emails in there and it still doesn’t work?

Yeah… its funny actually. Cant see all the vids in your profile.

I’ve “liked” them - so I can find the “private” ones from my list.

Looking at your Channel: CLR PERC. Wet/Dry & CLR Soundbed.

Says you have 13 Vids.

Kick & sounds pt.1 are in my liked playlist… but cannot see them on your profile.

Or the new one.

Might be kept private for only a few days or something. I can’t even see them on my profile though I can see them on my video list. I know it’s there. OK, I’m going to re-upload it and see what happens. Give me a few…

EDIT: OK, they are up now. Hopefully the new one took. I tried uploading it directly from Screeflow. Maybe YT didn’t like that. Who knows!
