Yeah - That word would be over here too - But we’d have called that relentless driving techno, kinda industrial & tough. I dont think people really had a word on it back then apart from TECHNO back then.
It was only after, when the really loopy stuff started going extremely pear shaped that things started getting more & more distorted and distressed. The 1st “Schranz” style that I remember hearing was stuff like Stigmata & then Chris Liebings later tunes.
Another guy - Andre Walter / Andrew Wooden, is credited on those tunes btw… a name that doesnt get thrown around as much as CL - but thems the breaks I suppose.
Maybe I’m wrong - but in my mind, they’re the start of Schranz.
That was around 99… which is the same timeframe as the track I posted, but I personally wouldnt class Inigo Kennedy as Schranz… Its in the same box as Surgeon / Regis / Downwards / Ruskin / Broom / Birmingham Sound. I suppose if anything, I would have called it (and still do) Birmingham Techno
Birmingham is more important to modern techno than Detroit.
You can hear how the sound of these records developed from 1 onwards… More & more extreme.

<EMBED height=345 type=application/x-shockwave-flash width=420 src=- YouTube allowscriptaccess=“always” allowfullscreen=“true”>oh that’s really funny. when you go into a recordstore in germany you will find all genres of electronic music like electro, minimal, techno, drum n bass AND schranz !
the term schranz was foundet by chris liebing in the 90s or so…
liebing had his own radioshow in cologne and always when he played stuff from british artists like surgeon and so on he called this as schranz. so the real meaning of schranz is distroted or overdrived sounds.
but then the term schranz gets popular in another meaning. it means real hard techno like 140bpm. but this meaning is wrong today u will find schranz sampling cd’s, schranz-partys, schranz-clothing…
the term schranz is one of the biggest techno-lengend-words in germany
btw. sorry for my bad english
Thomas - Your english is fkn fine Mate
ICN (23/08/2011)
Thomas - Your english is fkn fine Mate :)
really? i don’t know. okay, i think for understanding me it works
your definition of schranz is similar to my definition. that’s also funny. when you talk to 5 guys in germany you have 6 different definitions of this word.
most germans think schranz is a combined word of the two german words “schreien” and “tanzen”. in english scream and dancing.
Andrew Wooden / Andre Walter

That’s the real deal!
I used to buy a lot of tunes on “form” records in the early 2000’s. Stuff like Kay d smith.
Unfortunately I can’t post any vids because of my browser but I reckon that was early schranz.
There is a mix of mine in the podcast section with all that stuff on
http://forums.sonicacademy.com/Topic69377-11-1.aspx
What do you reckon about the Schranz Vs. Birmingham thing mate?
I reckon Schranz is just broken speaker distorted… Its not as abstract or forward facing as the “abstract techno”.
What do you think - They sound completely different to my ears.

Today’s schranz I don’t generally like. I’m sure there is stuff that I would like but the Birmingham thing is real quality. You can tell the brum guys know what their doing and have been around a while, their productions are top quailty. That’s what sets them apart for me. Quality music that could stand the test of time! And it’s 100% British
Brom boys rule - fck never thought I would say that :P:D:hehe:
I love Birmingham Techno
