Completing Tracks

Hey All

Im really having fun with ableton. Learning new stuff, experimenting, sampling, etc

The only real issue I have is this. I can not finish the track im working on!

It must be something new producers need to get through. I love the loop of what I made but to stretch it out into a 5 minute or so track seems daunting and not at all as fun as creating my full on loop. So my question is Do you have any tips, suggestions, ideas on how to stretch my loop of original music into a blazin track!

I know the obvious start off with less drums, build up , break down , repeat. Honestly though I’d like to not be cliche and predictable. That’s sorta the problem. At this rate Im never going to finish the 4 really good tracks I’ve started and I think have potential.

Thanks guys.

The simplest thing is find a track you love that’s a similar style to yours. Drop it into your project file in your DAW. Warp it to the same speed as your track. Then listen and use the DAW’s note system (there’s a great one in Ableton) to mark key transitions on the track. Write down what happens at that transition point.

e.g. (1) Fade in kick (2) Crash into hats etc

Now you have a skeleton idea of how to build your own track.

Alternatively, create dummy clips (empty of content) and draw them out the same length parts of the ghost track you’re using as a template. Drop them into the arrangement view in the same places they appear in the ghost track. You’ll have a full dummy arrangement in no time. Then just replace them with the real parts from your track.

All you need do now is work on the transitions and the FX/plug in modulation.

if you watch the cubase electro house tutorial, there is a video that shows how to do what jon mentioned. it helps a lot

great tips above. also if you get tired of your track and you feel that u need to change something don’t do it … my suggestion is to finish your track .

after finishing your track you will have a clear picture of what you need to edit. usually if you still feel unhappy with it . do another track having an idea what you need in your track.

at the end you need to practice as much as you can .

hope this help
