would some feedback, thanks everyone Stream STIRES & Okoh - Sanity (Original Mix) unmastered by StiresDJ | Listen online for free on SoundCloud
SOLID track. Very impressive stuff!
Notes:
- The percussion in the intro is just a touch too loud for my liking.
- The melody during the breaks is great – but not QUITE there. My gut is that you could actually get away with fewer notes and make it more “stable” so it’s easier to remember. Simplify it just a bit and it’s magic.
- Drop is GREAT! YES!
- The mix is a little fuzzy. I think you could get more aggressive with your cuts on a lot of elements and take some of the lows out in places to make the mix cleaner and give each element more separation.
- Overall mix could be brighter and have a touch more “shine.” I think Hardwell is the gold standard for the perfect Electro / Progressive House mix.
Seriously though – this is fantastic stuff. REALLY great track. How long have you been producing?
One more note: The white noise during the drop DEFINITELY needs some EQ. Lots of midrange and low end. Cut the lows heavily and boost the higher frequencies and it’ll have more punch and take up less of the overall mix.
Thank you, I really appreciate all your input!!! I’ve only been producing seriously for about the last 6 months.
Same here.
You’re a very quick study, my friend!
How did you learn so fast?
Do you spend alot of time producing/practising?
Personally I found the track nice but could be better.
To me personally the sounds sounded a bit weird, almost dull and unnatural. Its weird saying it cause the sounds are actually nice, it just all felt unnatural and out of place, maybe its just me. Maybe too much distortion.
I think you also cranked the maximizer up too much or something cause the whole track sounds somewhat distorted to me.
I definitely agree with Geek, the tracks melody has too many notes and its somewhat hard to whistle back to yourself. Its not bad either though if that makes sense.
I would like to see the more energetic bass bits merged with the melody at one point or the other maybe, like maybe a subtle perc melody with a decent amount of reverb over it? Probably worth a try at the least. Maybe reduce the melody to just a 2-4 bar section of the main melody that works best placed over the bass’ish bits.
I do think its pretty amazing for a 6 month product, getting nothing near it personally and ive got a year and a half under my belt
Thanks for the input Mistro! Really means alot getting everyones perspective. I haven’t listend to it intentionally for a few days and both yours and The Geeks responses have helped open my eyes
David- I try to emerse myself in as much education on the subject of production as possible and look forward to learning as much as I can everyday! sounds cheesy but even in sports growing up I always knew how much practicing and learning meant for game day. Just translating it to another passion in my life!
Couple of quick points from me.
- I feel the little percussion rhythm you bring in 30 secs in is a bit too loud, feel that would sound better pushed back in the mix a bit?
- I would possibly lp filter the melody in a little bit more at the beginning of the 30 sec drop?
- Again, as someone alluded to, your white noise seems to be very loud, maybe turn that down a little bit
- Your melody does seem a little too complicated, don’t get me wrong it works and if you’re happy with it then thats cool, i’d maybe look at the option of trying to simplify it a bit though, in a club simple is usually best?
Apart from that you’ve pretty much nailed it I think, i’m not a massive fan of these types of progressive house (I think those damn swedes have got a lot to answer for!) but all the elements are there and I really enjoy the electro hook you’ve got goin on
Great effort tho mate, i’ll follow you on soundcloud for sure!
Dj shiva- Thanks so much man, really enjoyed what you had to say! I’ll be following you on soundcloud
How’s dance music doing over there in the States Stires?
Where do you live exactly - do you have a good clubbing scene round there?
David.
I’m in Atlanta. Scene is going nuts in the States. Not as much in clubs here in Atlanta but all the major festivals are bringing in tons of EDM acts.
When I was living in Southern California it was EVERYWHERE. Clubs, festivals, everything.
I live in Los Angeles and the scene is just blowing up to ne honest. some of the best clubs in the united stated with superstar talent nightly, I love playing out here. No better job in the world!
Hey Stires, hope you’re good mate?
Okay, so just listened to your track and I agree with the comments about the percussion at the start. Its coming in a little too loud for the rest of the track and sounds harsh. I’d also think about maybe compressing all of the drums together on a bus channel to make them gel better?
I think you’ve got a really solid arrangement though that will sound awesome once its been mixed down and mastered correctly.
What I would say is that the drop after the main breakdown feels a little weak as the build-up is louder than the kick that slams back in so for me it loses some of it’s energy!
Kudos though Stires considering you’ve only been producing for 6mths. I’ve been doing it for just over a yr now and every day is a new adventure when it comes to producing music!
thanks enigma!
Stires and The Geek - i’d like to find out some more about the club scene in the US - think this is really important at the moment - it’s a topic of great debate amongst most people who love dance music, with some very strong opinions either side.
Would you guys be up for an email exchange to discuss this - think it would be interesting and informative for all three of us!
Let me know your email addresses and we can get things started.
Look forward to speaking guys,
David.
i think everyone covered the main points of criticism for the track, but as i am listening to it i actually really like the melody you have in the drop there. what you have here can definitely shake some floors.
did you do any low, mid, and high compression on your return tracks?
Thanks brotha! Your saying something like multi band compression on the returns?
