OK so recently I took a step back with my music, I had lost my mojo and I’ve figured it out I like to dig through tunes and sample stuff and make bits. Listening to all the other tunes for samples also inspires me and gives me ideas.
I think moving away from London, having kids etc changed this for me because I cant store endless amounts of records and have turntables setup 24/7 and I dont live near cool record stores anymore so I’m rethinking how I’ll go about this and keep the cost down.
I figured we could share this thread as an ongoing resource for beat making, maybe even the SA might do a tutorial on it?
I’m trying to do this with the gear I have and a few extras so Maschine is out of the question.
So what you think? Share our record hunting methods both digitally and vinyl/CD, the methods and gear you use etc and your inspiration here?
Here’s what I’ve been using/looking at…
Already got
Ableton and racks for slicing samples
Trigger Finger for midi controller
Headphones
I want to keep this process minimal to keep it ‘fun’ and creative
Thinking about getting
I’m considering a portable turntable like the Numark PT-01USB ideal for space limitation and should be ok for sampling if I decide to do non-vinyl stuff. It’s also VERY cheap.
I can easily see me sitting at the kitchen table wth my Macbook, Triggerfinger, phones, turntable and a bunch of records.
Websites for digging both crate and virtual
http://hypem.com seriously great music blog aggregator. easily find tunes and buy/listen/download
http://www.folkways.si.edu/ good little site for finding rare and unusual stuff.
