Ok before I start, can i just make this clear that this isn’t a rant based on myself, but on a general over all thought I had about the whole thing. I’ll round it up near the end.
You see all the time and every year, all these TV shows that are based around singers. Thing is, most of them can’t even write their own songs, yet they still end up with million pound recording deals and end up living the dream, on say the back of a reality TV contest. It’s not only the winners either.
You hear them all the time saying things like “all my life it’s all i dream off” and they’re sometimes like only 16, barely out of school. Do you not think anyone else’s musical dream is as big as if not more??!
Thing that gets me, is that you NEVER see producers or DJs on these talent shows. DJs & Producers have dreams too and yet they don’t have the opportunity to go on a tv show and show the world their skills and get given million pound deals?
Do you think this is because the general public feel that singing is more of a skill?
Or do you think it’s because production and DJing is more of a under appreciated skill set?
You see DJ’s and producers all the time struggling for years, putting so much love, time, money, effort into what they do, and it just takes the pss really when some kid goes on TV or posts up on Youtube of them singing over other peoples songs and then gets handed their dream on a plate.
Now don’t get me wrong, I mention DJ & Producers here because that’s what this site is about. But even other musicians don’t even ever seem to get much of a look in. Like someone on a guitar, or someone with a piano, etc.
Ok so Escala are the exception, but do you think they’d have done so well if they weren’t all hot and instead were like a collective of 50 somethings?
Is singing the most rated thing in the musicial world? Because - and dont get me wrong here because i do value a good singer’ - anyone really can open their mouth and start singing, be it sounding any good or not, where as no one can just pick up a guitar and start playing, get on decks and start performing, sit on a computer and produce amazing music, etc, etc, etc…
Even David Guetta wont get the recognition he deserves as much as say some tom dck or harry from Xfactor, even though he’s put so much more years, time, money and effort into his passion…
And another thing, and on a side note, that x factor is a farce, the BEST singer on there didn’t make it into the finals. I honestly don’t get it, that danyl guy was unbelievable and that olly guy sounded **** and out of key all the time.
Are the general public tone deaf???
well… DJing and dance music are very young concepts… the immediacy and legitimacy of vocal talent could be why these shows are popular and Susan Boyle got 15 min of fame.
of course, let’s not even go into the pop-oriented aspect of these shows and reality TV

That makes a good point actually, I guess I never really thought about how electronica and the arts behind it are actually relitivly ‘new’ concepts, compaired to others.
However it still doesn’t explain singing vs guitar for example.
Put a competition on between someone who is amazing at guitar and someone who is amazing at singing, the singer will probably get the most votes.
And you look at the charts now, there is this ‘battle’ between Joe (xfactor) and Rage against the machine, now come on… seriously…
Rage have more talent in their little finger, have many many MANY more years experience AND WRITE THEIR OWN SONGS!! So how is it even a contest??
The public are f*cked up beyond recognition.
AND
if it wasn’t for the producers behind the songs, many of these would be ‘superstars’ would be lost. Why should the singer get all the credit.

I blame Katie Price and Mixmag

You could say this about electronic music production as well then as many established names use engineering services to produce hit tracks for them - and the names in question take all the credit as well, is that really any different?
Mainstream or underground, without treading old ground I’m seeing shades of the previous topic I posted on producers and weather they get enough credit. My original post was more based around DJ’s using engineering services and yours focuses on mainstream things like the X-Factor with regard to singers, but is there really a difference?

I blame Howiegroove
There was a Dj/producer tv reality show that used to come on channel 4, the winner got to learn from some of the biggest producers in the dance industry and were given a residency in a big club (can’t for the life of me remember the name of the program)
i can remember being shocked at one of the producers on the program recording a flower opening in the morning and turning it into part of the track, the program was only ever on for one series and died out.
if anyone knows Danny Tenaglia (spelling) or pete tong ask them what it was called they were on it at one point

I would have loved to have seen this!!
“the program was only ever on for one series and died out.”
Just goes to show how under valued the industry / skill set is I guess.
Ah well, at least good producers do still at some recognition they deserve sometimes, like David Guetta, Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, Eric Prydz, Dave Spoon, etc.
Still, i guess it’s still seen as a ‘dark art’ for most, maybe because it’s so little understood?

You’ve bought back some memories there Jon. I caught a glimpse of this when it showed but I can’t remember the name of the program either. This guy stood out in a funny way when I saw it. He was taking this other guy around different locations with a tape recorder recording everything in sight - random people right through to the sound of the wind blowing against anything, trying to catch something ‘raw’ to incorporate into his music.
