If you were to give a newbie/wannabe deep house producer any advice or tips what would they be??
What are the best drum patterens/Synths/VST’s etc to use.
Thanks for any of your help
watch the Deep House tutorial!
other than that making nice stabs and good percussion is key… try the tribal house tut for the percussion. think there are stabs in the tech house tut.
Nice one Phil just about to do the tut now lol
Phil’s suggestions are good of course.
Plus, though Sylenth or any decent synth will do the job, I prefer Massive for deeper sounds/textures.
Is that Masssive in Reason? Or the other synth?

I’m currently working on a couple of DH tracks. The DH tut defo helps, but to put things into perspective, I find these are the key elements to DH.

Keep it Simple: approach it as if you were making minimal, but with different elements. Less is more. You’ll be filling on these ‘gaps’ in later with textures & effects.
Elements should be prioritized: drums first, bass second, stabs third. Anything else you want to add should be done to compliment the first three, not over power them, so spend the most time and making sure you’re happy with the drums, bass, and stabs, and their relationship with each other.
Effects & Textures: When you’re happy with the above parts, you need to make some BIG reverbs and delays to add textures and generally gel the whole thing together. For me this is the most important part, if you made a 4 bar drum loop and then slowly add these effects to it you’ll suddenly turn the loop into a groovy atmospheric DH loop. Those big reverbs seem to be signature for any DH tune now adays.
Research: It helps if you know the genre you’re trying to make, it even more so helps if you understand it’s origins, and what makes a DH track. For example, try and use filtered piano keys for your stabs, as paino keys were the signature for big chicago house tracks which could be considered the predecessor for DH.

I’m in no way an expert on it, but this is what I’ve learned in the time I’ve attempted to make the stuff. I often over-crowd my tracks, or at times am guilty of making elements too loud (drums etc, etc.), but I guess we all learn as we go along.

Oh, and as for what synth you use… Does it really matter? I can understand getting the right synth for job is important for genre’s like electro house and whatnot, but for DH it often isn’t important, as the stabs are generally piano keys or filtered keys, or sometimes really dry synth sounds are used to give that retro feeling. A low, sine + square synth can be used for stabs, simply play around with the cut off and reverb to make it sit right.
For me, I’ve had the most enjoyment trying to make DH then say, tech-house, because I find you can be far more creative as you have less elements to work with. Don’t rush a synth until you’re happy with the sound, create it from scratch, you’ll enjoy it much more doing it like this… You’ll find once you’ve made the core elements, arrangement for DH is super simple and you’ll probably be able to arrange the bones of a track in minutes once you’re happy with the core elements.
