Hey team.
I’m looking to go a bit more foley, and therefore am looking at digital stereo recorders. I just wondered if anyone had any recommendations or pointers.
Something like the below:

A friend has the tascam which he reckons is pretty good - but he uses it for recording meetings and such as he is blind - so I can’t borrow it
I got a really bad cheap dictaphone from argos for 30 euro. Was for an interview that I had to do & write something up for after.
Piece of sH!t.
But I’m going to try recording a few things with it out & about. I’m gonna add a load of FX on it anyway… so who cares.
Recorded myself (with a Mic) opening & closing a cd box & putting a glass down on a shelf. Then making a few MMM noises into the Glass.
Pitched everyting down by an octave & had a really fkn cool rhythm track happening in less than 5mins.
The sounds I made by humming into the glass were put though a ringshifter & sounded v. fkn cool. Like a dark delayed pad.
Am definitely gonna look into it more for a few unique sounds.
i wanted one a digital recorder a while back but couldnt find a decent one cheap enough.
i wanted to be able to record wav.
tascam and edirol ones were really expensive and nothing about on ebay so i quit
Yeah - I was looking at one of those ones that look like a Tazer there a while back - but they’re stoopid money
Especially for something that you’re gonna use like a big kid with a flashlight :hehe:
I’ll wait until the next technology comes out & I can afford my dreams :pinch:
Yeah in many ways I could argue quality is less of an issue as I’ll only mangle the sounds I record with it anyway, but I’m trying to buy the best of everything I can these days as I only out grow it and then buy the more expensive one later anyway…
haha!
Thats true mate. They are actually not that expensive really - but its just I was thinking about buying other stuff! Always the way!
That little Tascam one looks v.reasonable.
Cant say I know a lot about them, but it would be nice to get the stereo mic’s happening.
That tascam at the top looks cool, the ones I was looking at before were at least double that price. Still I wouldn’t buy one new I’d be looking on ebay
You can pick up a new one in the states for around £80 if you want to risk customs don’t pick it up and charge you
I went for the Tascam in the end, seems ok so far, not had chance to use it. I’m expecting everythingI do to start sounding a lot more foley tho now!
Am going to the London Tombs on the weekend, gonna try and sneak it in there, should be good for some sounds that I reckon!
I had the opportunity to use zoom h-2 , pretty neat ! It delivers the best quality i’ve heard from a digital recorder , also can be used as mic. Hope this helps.
+1 for zoom h2

Check that one out by Roland. It’s pretty new. I heard it even avoids any noise from the outside, even if your outdoors. 24bit.
Yo bang,
Have you received your tascam yet? Just wondering if you could give us a review on it?
I’m torn between the edirol 09 and tascam 07 and heard mixed reviews on both

Me too
I have but I haven’t had a proper chance to test it out yet!
I’m nipping out now so might grab some foley ambience with it, then records a few knocks and bangs and see how they come out from different distances etc, and I’ll upload them.
Thanks bang - look forward to this
OK, took some fairly random samples today.
Can find the original Wav’s here:

The quality is variable, but that’s largely my fault. The out door stuff I forgot to take the muffler, so the wind is really bad, and stuff further away is ok, but not great. Close up stuff is much better.
There is one where I kick some leaves outside and it comes across ok I think, and the samples of the taps is a good example of it set up properly, a good warm sound I thought.
The unit itself could feel a little sturdier, but over all I am happy with it. Will defo serve my needs.
Those samples are royalty free by the way
Cheers mate some top samples right there
The sound quality is really good, perfect for what I need
Does the tascam come with a speaker? Or is it headphones?
Headphones, which is another minor annoyance, but nothing major.
I put my iphone inside a printing press at work the stereo mic recording … had some interesting results and unique transients. I added a PSP gate compressor which worked really well, some reverb, then I had to stop because I blew my load!
