Thought I might not be the only one interested in this.
I have been itching for a new studio desk for awhile now, but everywhere I look they are either crap or $1,000 and up.
I’ve become quite frustrated with it and finally decided to try and do it myself.
I came across a great website http://plans.thefrankes.com/ that has bulding plans for only $9.95, and the total cost of the build itself is around $100! I decided to build workbench #2 with a couple of my own modifications.
If you check out their forum http://www.rackcreations.com/forum/ they have other people’s examples and also walk you through the building process. It seems fairly simple, as you can just take the layout over to a local lumber yard that has a milling service and they’ll cut all the pieces for you. After that it’s almost no different than putting an IKEA desk together.
I’ll keep everyone posted on my progress and upload some pics when I get started.
Saw some really cool ones when I was looking at plans myself. You can build something incredible for a fraction.
I was toying around for a good while with the same idea… but in the end managed to get 2nd hand “studio” desk - one of the ones with the top shelf for speakers.
Really happy with it. Needed something cos my Son is an Ape. Maybe happy isnt the word - I’m probably more relieved that everything isnt fkn smashed :hehe: :D
BTW - If anyone is looking to build a “desk” rather than a piece of studio “furniture” - Ikea sell a great selection of legs & supports. Wont break the bank either. Nicer to have powder coated metal or stainless finish on stuff.
It looks simple, but in the end it might get shipped over for your bonfire Slender.
I recently had to build this http://youtu.be/ITnGn_XTEWw (mine is the first obstacle) for engineering class last semester so I better be able to pull off building a desk. lol
@ICN: I thought about going the IKEA route, but like you said, I can build a good cheap desk, but not anything close to a studio desk.

haha! Thats a cool vid. It wont come anywhere near a bonfire man - You know what you are doing.
Whats that saying, measure twice, cut once? Building sh!t like that once you have a plan is is “big lego” [/quote]
Wish I could build big, but there’s not much there. Unfortunately, I have to share the room with my girlfriend who has her side filled up with art junk. I’m building it at 70.5 inches long(oh wait I mean 1.79 meters haha). Then the plans show that it only has 23.75 inches (oh wait again, 60.3 cm) of height for my legs, and that’s too short since I’m 6’4" so I’m gonna add a couple of inches/cm’s (that’s what she said). Lastly, the shelf on top of the desk is to short as well. I’m going to raise that and add rackmounts underneath (even though I have nothing to mount yet).
It all sounds good in theory.
Glad you liked the vid. The funny thing is that’s the bass drum from my profile pic on here. It finally got put to good use. :hehe:
From what I’ve been reading up on, I’m told 3/4" Birch Plywood is best to use. I learned more about wood than I ever really wanted to know. I didn’t know there was a grading system for wood. They explained how your local Home Deopt or Lowes won’t carry the good stuff and that you should find a good lumber yard.
I’ll spare you many of the other details, unless you want them, but yeah it’s a little crazy.
@J4 did you watch that CDJ video? That guy can be found in isle 5 of Home Depot…the tool isle. (I know how bad that joke was and I don’t care)
I did not even realize that I wrote that. Usually, when I write my posts I have you and ICN in mind for quirky comments and shinnanigans, but that one slipped by.
Enjoy it my friend because it will not happen again.
