Watch the dj with ableton tutorial on this website.
I have done before but it doesnt talk about the hardware needs.
Really?
If you want to make life easy on yourself and all you want to do is to DJ with Ableton, then I would get the Audio 8 or whatever from Native Instruments. Francis Preve did a review on it and said it was amazing.
use traktor to dj it so simple. you could slave ableton if you wanted

yeahh Audio 8 rocks. really easy and very portable interface for gigs.
I want to use Ableton for LIVE performance as well as DJ.
I want to do more than i can do with CDJs, just like when i moved from vinyl to CDJ i knew that CDJ gave me more scope to do more.
I’ll look into that Audio 8, thanks.
Check the Audio 4 too, that’s a lot cheaper and has the I/O’s you need.
I think the Audio 8 is overkill. The point of the Audio 8 is so that you can connect two decks to 4 of the ins and use the time code CDs or records to control Traktor. Audio 2 will do the job just as well.
If you want to have a go with the equipment you have got you could set it up like this:
In Ableton set Options - audio - Output - select 1&2 and 3&4
Then in master channel set cue out to 3&4 and master out to 1&2
Then from your audio card outputs connect 1&2 to active speakers or amp.
As you don’t have a headphone socket on your audio card you will need to connect 3&4 to a headphone amp (if you don’t have one you could connect it to your mixer and use that as a headphone amp)
Click the X next to the bottom of master to turn on cross fader, select which channel will be A and B and you are away.
I use a novation nio, not a bad bit of kit, http://www.dv247.com/computer-hardware/novation-nio-2-4-2-in-4-out-audio-interface–40638?gclid=COvyqILMvKQCFYVA4wodv2UA1A

Why DJ With Ableton Live? - DJ TechTools
Awesome!
Cheers
Just had a read, sounds great.
It’s interesting what it said about you can only use WAV (or live converts your mp3 to wav if it isn’t wav) because i’d actually like to be going completely WAV anyways.
Plus the thing is, I want to be doing multiple ‘deck’ mixing, sampling, effects on the fly, even load up a midi keyboard and play along to my tracks, using things like the Scaler plug in to help out.
I recon it would really open doors to extra creativity with DJing!
Check out Will Marshall’s DJ TEMPLATE http://vimeo.com/13539506
The video shows his free template which has some really good effects and will show you what can be achieved DJing with ABLETON.
The other good thing about DJing with ABLETON is you can add some live percussion, basslines ect. all in on the fly, even with just your computer keyboard.

lol. LEMME THINK…
deadmau5, justice, daft punk, glitch mob… and many more…
technically speaking none of those claim to be dj’s but i’ll shut up now lol
Well I nearly commented that, if you call it DJing, you’re limiting yourself really.
It should be much more than that, more akin to performance - with DJ elements.

Bit misleading
Traktor and Ableton will not rewire, Traktor doesn’t support rewire but you can still midi sync. you need to enable traktors virtual output as a midi out port and in live select that output as live’s midi sync input.

Spot on.
Exactly what i want to be doing, misleading topic title really.
lol no arguments there about the dj versus performace thing. the whole point of using ableton is to get the live performance thing going for yourself as an artist… im totally with you guys there and I have posted about this difference on this forum many times.
i guess my point was in response to the comment that no self-respecting dj would use ableton wasnt accurate…
im sure they dont tell DJ Mag they are not DJs when they get voted into the top 100.
funkagenda is another guy. he uses ableton, apc40 and a macbook. is he a DJ?
The only issue i have is… what the f*ck do you do when your macbook crashes mid-set?

Its very very rare.
Take an iPod along, seriously.
I know a few DJs who do this. Just to have something playing while you reboot etc. Like Howie says though, can’t imagine it happening that often, but you need to cover yourself either way.
I’d even still take some CDs too just to cover all bases.
