What’s the beef around monitoring your audio through your controller? Do you need 2 x soundcards or how does that side of it work?
For PC set up.
just dont DJ with ableton! its a cop out!! lol no real DJ use it!! hehe
alot of big DJ’s use ableton to DJ. Use whatever you like. As long as you rock the crowd, who cares what you use.
However, what are you referring to as the “beef” with using a mixer or whatevs? Im a bit confused by your question.
Most headphone outs on soundcards are set to 3/4 by default. So press the IO in ableton on the right hand side, next to master out you’ll see cue out. Set that to 3/4 and it should work.

So i could still play music whilst being able to seperatly monitor and que my next audio through headphones?
Do i go through an audio interface?
This is the soundcard I have:

Anyways I have 4 x CDJs here, I was thinking of selling my CDJ 800mk2s to make room and also give me some cash to go towards some new speakers and possibly an ableton controller. Still got the CDJ 2000s to use, but i was half thinking of going over to Ableton for LIVE performance (obviously i’d need to invest in a macbook first).
I’d quite like the freedom of open creativity whilst playing live but to be quite honest, i’ve never really gone about it before so not really sure what i’m doing.

As that sound card doesn’t have a dedicated head phone socket, your gonna have to get some cables that will turn one of those red white outs into a headphone socket.
A trip to maplin’s on London road and you’ll be sorted mate
I have the Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ.
It has 2 outputs, one for the main monitor, one for your headset.
It works well with traktor, never tried in ableton.
Any card with 4 outs will do, (actual even a card with 2 out will do if you working in mono) plug both channels in to a dj mixer and pronto you have all that’s needed
that’s pretty good setup if you want to work along CDJs, other than that anything like Audio 2 or better will do
I have an Audio 4 DJ. Abletons Master set to 1/2 and the monitor channel set to 3/4.
This means that yes, I can cue a track up while something else is playing. Not checked your audio interface but if it has two stereo outputs then you are golden.

lol. LEMME THINK…
deadmau5, justice, daft punk, glitch mob… and many more…
although djing with ableton is not the same as even using tracktor, cause if you dont have the track pre-warped and ready 2 rock you wouldnt be able to play it properly… so your track selection is all pre-setup… so you can’t really be as spontaneous…
unless of course you get super awesome at warping tracks. then ur alright.
i think best thing 2 do for it would be 2 have two channels like deadmau5 with like 50-100 prewarped tracks in each channel. then you could add some randomness to your setup.
The best use of Ableton for this sort of thing is going beyond the whole 1 tune into the next thing.
Cut tunes up, make edits, layer in your own sounds, samples, synths etc mind boggling amounts of possibilites really.
I always find it weird that no one seems to be really really taking advantage of what is possible with the scope of digital DJing…
Naturally I am too lazy/talentless to step up and fill that gap
Guys i wasn’t asking for dj tips haha, just how i set it up so that I can use it properly lol
Anyways cheers!
My mate uses ableton for his DJ setups (house and hard dance) and he uses an Edirol soundcard, any other card with 2 outs will do.
If you want to use an external mixer here is what to do :
Set up your Ableton set to have at least 4 channels (you can add more either side if you want). Your middle 2 channels will be your outputs, middle left is your left out and right channel is the right out. Change the outputs in each lane to go to your separates outs on your soundcard. Your outer channels are like your left and right deck to load warped clips into. You can add more either side for extra “Decks”.
We have DJ’s back to back with myself on traktor and him using ableton to have a 6 deck set
I saw some guy doing this the other day.
He was using a novation launch pad controller with ableton, maybe CDJ’s too, all running through a mixer.
Really don’t know how you’d go about setting it up however, sorry man. I’m still yet to figure that one out myself.

I was more answering the comment about DJing with Ableton not being ‘real’ Djing etc.
Don’t worry, I already know you are Brighton’s answer to David Rodigan :w00t:

Watch the dj with ableton tutorial on this website.
Hey Roben I think u need an new external interface with 2 digital outputs and a monitor. . the soundcard that u have have only one Analog output and the Digital output is useless as long that u get an Adapter. with 70 bucks u can get a really small USB interface with enough analogs outputs for gigs. this works if you hook the interface to the Dj mixer. now if you want to use your interface to monitor the signals u might need to buy a whole new Interface .
hopefully this helps
BTW ableton is fun but did you tried Traktor with the X1 controller?

No, the card has 4 analog outs.
Roben you just need to go to maplin and get an adapter.

ohh my mistake . i tought i seen 1 analog out and 1 digital SPDIF out… but even do he buys an adapter he will not be able to monitor with that sound card unless he connect it directly with the DJ mixer
