DnB WIP - Mixdown thoughts?

Hi Guys

had a go at putting a mixdown and a bit of mastering on this track I have been working on. I was using a 10 day trialof Izotope Ozone, which ran out, so this is my own work here with the ableton plugins. Gonna have to stup up for that Izotope, one hell of a piece of kit!

Anyways I made the drum beats with a couple of breaks that I chopped up and messed around with, layered with some hits underneath on the Kick and Snare to try and get them to punch through well. All the other sounds are made using Operator that comes in Ableton Suite 8, been watching some tutorials on it, and its a cool piece of kit if used well. I hope I pulled something off with my bass work here. Sort of Nueroish I guess.

Feedback on the levels, instruments, beats, mixdown in genral all appreciated. Also if the tune is any good I guess, always lose sight of that with the production malarkey!

what sort of tracks are you listening to or you want it to be kind of similar too?

Hi Philbr
br
You know if I could get my way to doing, it I am looking for that darker DnB sound that Labels like Critical and Shogun are putting out.br
br
Albums on my rotation include:-br
br
Enei - Machinesbr
Audio - Soul Magnetbr
Octand Dlr - Method in the Madnessbr
Calyz Teebee - All or Nothingbr
br
But I also am really liking the Jungle Sound that is coming back a bit with people like Bladerunner.br
br
I feel like I am making prog house at 174bpm most times when I lsten to a track  . br
br
Dont want to sound like anyone persay, just that style of hard dark dnb. I think I struggle slightly with the melody line/instrument. I seem to have things bunching up in the mid range, say between 700-1500. Seems to be where all the sounds I make fit, then they sound a mess, and I take em out again.br
br
Cheers

Any view on the tune that was made?br
br
What about production value, does it sound well done that way?br
br
Cheers!

I think you are pretty close actually.br
br
few things to try.br
br
The bass pattern changes a couple of times which i dont think is necessary… seems quite repetitive in the tracks im hearing.br
br
The Drums sound a bit clicky and a bit cold. Try using a bit of saturation and Ableton 1976 compression with attack at zero to just gel them them together a bit. Also some light reverb just to give a tiny hint of space should warm things up a bit.br
br
The kick sems like it is sitting a bit higher up the spectrum compared to the stuff you posted… a bit of 80-90 EQ boost will warm it up.br
br
The sub Bass lacks a bit of depth too… a bit of 50-60 boost or layer up a sine wave.br
br
I think you need more atmosphere sounds… a lot of those tracks you posted had like outdoor ambiances or weird Atmospheres… they kind of bring the tracks to life… look on http://www.freesound.org/ tons of random atmosphere stuff there.br
br
a Few more spot FX Blips hits and other different interesting elements with big Reverbs on them will also add to the atmosphere.br
br
post up again when youve tried some of that and ill try to get back sooner next time

Ok so i tried to meddle with the other track and lost my way a bit, still on the back burner, but been doing some fresh ideas.br
br
here is one I have fashioned mostly from and EMU 808 sample from the DJ Fracture pack, just a one time bass hit.br
br
Could you give it a once over, a critique, I hope I have taken some of your points on board relating to the other track.br

Sounds much smoother and bettr mixed than the last one… the FX really ad much more depth. Sounding good.br
br
one bit i didnt really like was at 1:28 when it starts to get really repetitive… takes away from the groove for me.br
br
What you should do is like a call and answer with a 2 different sounds… so keep what you have before 1:28 going and find a new sound to fill the hole in the few beats after. try not to put it on the down beat (i.e. where the kick and snare hit)… try have it on the 4rd beat of the bar to get some groove going.

Did an answer to the riff, and mixed it up slightly for the 2nd drop. br
br
Here it is, any further comments, still a few bits and bobs I want to add and touch up, but getting there I think!br
