Does anyone have any books they recommend?

Hey All,

Just wondering if anybody has read any oustanding books they recommend…

I love the sonic academy videos, they are definately one of the best tools…

I’m wondering if anybody has read or would suggest any books on Ableton Live, Cubase, Computer Music Theory, Dance Music Production, Music Composition…

I’m interested in learning the in-and-outs of cubase & live.

But im also interested in learning more music theory (specifically for computers & EDM).

post up your suggestions! thanks in advance!

Dance Music Manual by Rick Snow pretty much covers everything and very well too.

Migh also want to look at Music Theory for Computer Musicians. Links for both below.

The I have both and can vouch for the Rick Snow one, the latter I am still waiting to tuck into, so fingers crossed.

I just wanted to point out that I purchased the Dance Music Manual.

Lots of great info in this book. Exactly what I was looking for.

DESCRIPTION
Legendary musician Peter Hook tells the whole story of Manchester’s most iconic nightclub, the Hacienda - the fun, the music, the huge loss of money and the legacy.
My girlfriend bought it me the other week for my birthday, only managed to read a little so far but fantastic book!

Get Secrets of house music production, load better then the Dance Music Manual!

I’m sure that book is good, but Peter Hook is a fail as a DJ

How he gets any gigs is beyond me

Oh dont worry, i totally agree but the book really interested me, Hacienda was something i was waaaaaay to young for but always interested me so im glad i got it.

bob katz…mastering

I just seen hes playing the next hacienda classics night at sankeys. I might call them up and see if they’ll let me play a mix mag cd and dance around like a twat lol.

Yeah I might get that book mate, love watching 24 hour party ppl and hearing about the madchester days.

Yeah i saw where they were doing a Hacienda night at Sankeys… Im tempted to go, especially with it being just down the road from me too… Hmm, we shall see.

Deffo worth getting in my opinion, wont be disappointed!

I checked there official site the other day too, they have a Hacienda Print on there for £75… nice, but i dont think its worth that!

Yeah they do them every few months. They’re not bad.

I think i’m going sankey’s next 2 fridays, tribal sessions this week then next week format b and dj madskillz! Can’t wait to see Madskillz, one of my fav producers! He’ll have that place rocking! You should come to that one mate, be a tech house masterclass

The best tech-house masterclass that i ever saw at Sankeys was Joachim Garraud and he always will be… that night he took me on a trip i would never forget… lol :hehe: i think it was last year, went for my birthday and his set was just out of this world! if you ever get the chance to see him, do it unless you already have! He started his set with Darude Sandstorm on his MIDI keyboard, followed by dropping prodigy from nowhere and just anything else he could possibly think of playing. I have only ever seen him play there that once, shame as i would go and see him again too! :frowning:

Im due to go sankeys soon actually, where you from? you near to sankeys? we should arrange to go for a night out

Yeah I’m over due a sankeys night. Last one was claude von stroke, was really good! Played a house set with loads of jacking tunes, didn’t rly expect that from him coz last time I saw him he was playing techno haha.

I went to uni in Manc, but now live hour away on the train in southport.

If you come to Madskillz send me a message, I’ll get ya number!

Deffo buddy, sounds like a plan!

If not that one, we will sort another night out at Sankeys

Yes mate! I’m always up for a sankeys night!

Now, I haven’t read it yet, but my Berklee professor recommended “The Guide to MIDI Orchestration”

Looks interesting…

some really good suggestions so far

i can vouch for the secret to house music or whatever it’s called, music theory for computer musicians and dance music manual

how is the bob katz book? i have a similar book for mixing / master and it’s good but i’m working entirely in the box and atlhough the concepts are the same a lot of seems to be a bit dated and bit lengthy, i like stuff that is pretty much to the point
