Driving Minimal (Avrosse, Ventil Shape)

Hi Guysbr
br
I have been trying to make this sound for ages, without this strong driving bass my minimal songs sounds weak and plonky. I know some people actually take these tracks and cut up the bass parts to use in there own tracks but that seems like cheating. br
br
I am fairly certain the sound is a saw wave and sine wave, with the cutoff being modulated by an envelope, but no matter what I fiddle with I can`t seem to get it right. I try playing with the cutoff and the sound is too bright or too muted. Change the resonance and it starts to sound like an acid bass. Perhaps there is some distortion added? I have tried playing with sausage fattener and no results. Any help would be greatly appreciatedbr
br
Thanks br

Hello mate, i haven’t actually been able to listen to the clip, as at work, but i think i know the kind of sound you are referring to here.br
br
The key is the filtering, even very small changes to exactly how the sound is filtered, can make a huge difference to whether or not what you have sounds right.br
br
As you mentioned, it can be hard to get the sound muted enough, you need to avoid having too many harmonics in the mid-high and higher frequencies, otherwise the sound becomes too bright and no good for this genre.br
br
One thing that can work is to apply a filter envelope to the patch in your synth, but then add another ‘external’ low-pass filter after the synth, and bring the filter cutoff down on that. That way, no matter what’s going on with regards to the filter and filter envelope in your synth, you know you’re not going to have too many higher frequencies. This can really help get that muted sound, with lots of deeper bass coming through.br
br
The rest is really just trial and error, but what i would say, is that very small and subtle changes can have a huge affect on the sound. So you need to be very meticulous when you are creating patches in your synth, and really think about what you’re doing.br
br
Try messing with filter cutoff, filter envelopes, resonance, distortion etc, but remember that sometimes all it takes is just a couple of little tweaks to transform the sound from something that doesn’t quite sound right, into something that’s perfect for the genre. It can be frustrating but it’s all down to lots and lots of practice and experience!br

Try using 2 envelopes instead of one to get the perfect balance between muted and bright!

Again you can run the oscillators through 2 different filters, one with more resonance than the other, to get a mix of more acid type sounds and not so acid!

Sidechaining often works wonders as well, to really get something that sounds big and pumps with the kick to create that all important groove!

Thanks heaps Dave, I gave it a go and got a fairly good result. I think creating the sound is equally in the sound design/synthesis itself as well as eqing to make sure that the kick and drum dont fight for space and busing everything together with glue compressor.br
br
For anybody else who is wondering, it just so happens that the producer whose music and bass sound I was trying to emulate, actually did a quick youtube tutorial! br

Is there anybody else on this forum who likes to make this sort of driving or funky minimal?

If you have Sylenth, there’s a Bass Patch in a sound set I have that would work for this with a little tweaking, which is just called Sub Bass, it’s a couple of detuned saws but with an added Sine wave I reckon you’d be there.br
br
PM me and I’ll send over the patch later when I get homebr
br
Oh sorry, I missed you vid above, you’ve clearly solved the problem! Like the tune btw.br
