Hi guys,
Hope you’re all well.
Can anyone help me? I am trying to get the Dustin Zahn sound he used for Stranger to Stability (Len Faki Podium Mix). Youtube video click here.
The intro is very driving, it sounds like there is reverb being pumped/side chained between each kick, is this right? I know how to side chain, but unsure of how to get this particular effect. Can anyone help?
Also, the lead after 1min 15secs, is it just a sawtooth wave?
Any help will be much appreciated.
All the best
Andy
id love to see an HTSL for this as well…or any of Dustin’s stuff
Great track
that track is awesome. it pumps and pumps. the build and energy is spot on.
Would love to see something in this style. That whole Berghain sound is really interesting.
I really love that whole Dark Techno vibe - The best examples are utterly mental sounding.
Would love to see a HTSL on it.
Hey - Even Teisto plays it! LOL

Yeah - Some of them are really messed up. I love the way some of it sounds almost glitchy against that driving 4/4.
I know an interesting way to making similar low rumbling basslines:
Get a Drum loop (Quite Perc-y) & cut everything above 90hz-ish.
Compress the absolute F*** out of it. You want to make it really warm / fuzzy & full. I’ve been using the PSP Vintage Warmer 2 on this bit. But you could probably do something similar if you persisted with some overdrive & compression here.
Then addd another compressor - Sidechain it just enough to bounce - nothing too hard, unless you want it to of course.
I’ve been messing around with it a bit. You want to make sure the pattern & probably the Key compliments your own Kick. You’ll also need to EQ them both as you would normally.
You can get snipping & move the loop around to change the pattern. Reversing single bits here & there is cool as well. I’ve got SubBoomBass & keep meaning to make my own Loop to do this way but havent got around to it yet. Using the loops are cool as you can arrange them yourself - but they have a groove already & they can end up sounding very interesting.
Then its just a case of getting a few single shots and moving them around the grid on you arrange to get that sparse glitchy groove… with a bit of bitcrushing / delay & reverb. Pitching up or down the odd hit here & there is good too to make almost a melody out of it.
These guys seem to use a lot of Reverb on these tracks, on the Kick etc… A Mate on another Forum told me that its a Kick sent through a Reverb as an Insert on a channel strip. Havent got that far yet… but tbh… I just want to take the elements that I like & not ape the whole style.
However - I certainly have not mastered it all - at all! I would definitely love to see a HTSL in this genre.

Dettmann has played in Dublin a few times & I havent been able to get up to see him… but one day hopefully! LOL
Thanks ICN appreciate the comprehensive method - guess what I will be trying this weekend

Cool Slender.
Just after remembering something else that helped. The Vintage Warmer has a Wet/Dry amount control. Adjusting it back down - You’ll know yourself, made it sound better.
I suppose if you dont have it, saturation & overdrive are probably the best bets. But if you can, experiment with the wet/dry 'til it sits right.
This is just really for you icn to see if you think I am on the right track

Hey Man,
F*** - Put my earbuds in & my brain started vibrating! LOL
Thats cool - Dark & stripped back…
What are you using for the bass? Sounds really wide.
Really like the hat & sample. Good hat! LOL Wanna hear more - Sounds fkd’up! :hehe:
Thanks icn
Well I took your advice and invested in the SubBoomBass and fiddled with the subbass presets, side chained it then an overdrive and then a long low reverb to widen it. The difficulty is holding back and not adding to much to get that monotounous feel but still grooving.
Will post here my progress later on in the week

Welcome to my world!
Hey slender, start adding other percussion elements to that loop and build it. U could have something good there man.
Thanks Kieran
I think I have found a nice little min percussion loop that may fit with some cutting and stuff - probably post the next stage tomorrow
@icn - as an experiment (not tried out yet myself) is copy the loop for about 8 mins listen to it and make a note when you feel like adding something - listening to some of the producers you listed i cut out all the top end and made notes when I thought it needed something and 80% of the time i was right - hope that makes sense had a ****e day at work
Between work, the nice weather and a little alchol abuse as well as building a music PC I have not had much time to work on the track but heres the 2nd installment - I have been making notes which I will share when completed - as always comments welcome
