Hey guys something I’ve always wondered,
For main synth rolloffs as a rough rule of thumb I usually start with a 24 HP at around 200hz and play around with it from there.
Whenever I watch other production videos (including SA) almost everyone tends to use 12 pole filters to roll off their synths with a low ish Q at around 100hz ish (depending on sound).
Now I know its “trust your ears”, “whatever sounds best”, but I seem to never have much luck with the subtle roll offs, especially on predominant sounds in the mix. Which leads me to think either my ears are off, or I’m doing something “wrong” here.
Is there any particular reasoning behind the subtle roll offs? Also I’ve noticed in the SA tutorials they often use auto filter for the rolloffs, Is this just because its higher quality than abletons EQ? Or is there some advantage to using that (or something similar like fab filter) as oposed to a higher quality EQ such as Pro - Q?
Thanks!
For cutting eq esps subtle roll offs eq quality isnt really a factor. Eq quality only really comes in to play with the higher freqs.
I use auto filter for cuts as its less button presses than the eq8
Wether to use subtle or more agressive cutting is really dependent on how much space you have in the low mids.
That makes sense.
interesting, about the quality factor of EQ’s…
Thanks Phil
