EQing bass and kick frequencys

Hey guys, i have some well eq’d kicks and im trying to put a bass line on it. how do i properly make sure that my frequency arent crossing so i can get the fullest sound out of each of the sounds? i have problems with eq’ing my bass

thanks guys

You gotta think about where you want the bass to be in terms of prominence and power…

For example, take your sub, first thing you wanna do is cut out all the unnecessary audible frequencies… Unless, obviously, its something you want…

You can do this by lowpassing around the 120hz region.

For your mid bass you wanna do the opposite, high pass it at around the 30-50hz region to take away its low end so that it doesnt clash with the kick.

For either the two what you really want to be doing (and this is the most important part) is find the key your kick is in and use the eq’s to take away from that frequency so that the kick doesnt clash with either… Dont over do it though cause it will result in a thin sounding bass…

Again im no pro at this stuff but this seems to be the basics of eqing basslines wherever I look…

The more important part is using all those extra fx on your bass… Slight modulation and distortion + some compression and all that other crap…

Master those bits on your bass and thats where it’ll start to sound nice and powerful…

Oh and BTW most people tend to push their subbass to mono alongside the kick and slightly widen the mid bass… You should definately also use side chaining to really make sure they dont clash…

I would suggest downloading span and putting it on the kick and bass so you can analyze the frequencies that are present and to see which ones might be clashing…and causing a disturbance in the force  then you have to decide what will occupy the sub bass range of your track, a Bass tone, sub bass layer, or the low end of the kick. If you want a Mid Bass with a subby layer do what Mistro Pain said and remove the lows from the kick or you can sidechain to duck the low frequencies of the bass so the kick can punch through and if youre going to use the low end of the kick just remove the same frequencies from the bass.

just make sure your kick and bass are in key!

if you have a sub, then make sure it duznt hit on the same notes too much otherwise

use sidechaining.

any other basses that you wish to use then cut out the really low end like mistro pain

said. preferably i’d go for about 70-80hz here though :stuck_out_tongue:

good tip for mid basses… set up a nice hard mid distortion return track and send some

of the signal to it. really thickens it out

Most tunes I hear online the kicks sound weak even good mixing seems to have a weak sounding kick - but when I play Trance hits the kicks all sound hard and the bass pushes out while the synths wrap around your head .

To date no videos have yet help me - Cut share bass so on so forth I get it but still not producing that pro sounding bass
