So I’ve been sitting working on a new track recently and hit a block - got a lot done up till the main brake but I’m getting no where with the main melody, so insted of sitting looking at my screen all day I decided to do a little tut on EQ’ing.
Might help, might not! Anyway, let me know what you think, should help people new to production more then anything else.
This is part 1, part 2 is still uploading… I’ll reply with it when done:
And part 2
Good stuff, Wayne!

lol nice perfect was having some problems !!
Hi wayne! i was so happy that i could watch this! I LOVE YOU MAN!
I wanna know how you sidechained your kickdrum on that track.
Or how you made it so “clear”, could you please show us what your tricks are with getting the kick so loud and pumping? I loved that kickdrum actually.
thanks once again!
actually there isnt much on that kick. I used basslane (a free plugin) to make it mono which helps in cubase due to the paning law, there is a little maximisation on the kick but I took it off after the tutorial as it isnt needed. The maximisation is actually not used when the track is playing in the intro etc.
It sound so clear becuase the volume level are set well AND because the bass is spilt into layers - the sub bass and low mid are separate meaning you can apply different levels of sidechain to each layer and different EQ to each, cutting holes for the kick. Also tuning the kick helps and ensures there is no dissonance when the bass changes which also stops any “muddy” kind of sound.
I’ll be doing more stuff on the including a kick tuning tutorial which might help so be sure to subscribe to my you tube channel for the latest
wow! wasn’t expecting an answer so quick, thanks for that!
So you sidechain the sub-bass less than the low-mid when cut that “hole” for the kick to fill in, am I right?
Which compressor do you use? and what do you think of Cubase’s own compressor?
Can i PM you in the future? when i’ve tried the things you just told me so you can listen to it
thank you

if anything the sub is sidechained more but, you need to get the attack and release and threshhold etc etc all set right, there isnt any magic to this. use your ears.
I used cubase’s compressor for it which is fine, its very different to abletons compressor, took me some getting used to. I also like fabfilters pro c for sidechaining.
Also however, the sub the bass plays on the same note as the kick and on the off beats - velocity of the on beat notes also come into play and the sound I made all comes into play - you’ve gotta get them all geling and working in harmony.
Nice job Wayne.
Track sounds good too.
Wish I could get my hands on the Pro EQ.
Still building up my Synths right now.
One more and I’ll be ready to start getting mixing essentials.
all right! thanks for that, it was very helpful:)
Im just wondering how you got that red headset icon in your fabfilter Q. so you can only hear the affected frequencies. I’ve looked inside fabfilter pro q but i don’t know where to enable it.
thanks for sharing Wayne … very helpful-)
