EQing

Where would be the best place to find video tutorials on EQing? I know the very very basics, such as high pass filtering my leads and pads so that the low frequencies dont interfere with the drums and bass… and hi pass filtering my cymbals etc … but when it comes to having a lead, a pad and maybe a piano playing, it can sound very muddy because they are using alot of the same frequencies, would like to learn about how to eq all this properly so that everything sits in its own space in the mix and you can hear each element clearly in its own space

hey dude. ill give you a general rule of thumb. You need to avoid the dreaded 300hz to 1000 hz range. There are alot of sounds in this area, so use your eq on your sounds wisely. roll off frequencies without actually affecting the “meat” of the sound. Even though you arent hearing the other frequencies playing, they are there (they are called partials) and they need to go bye bye. So use EQ in that sense. Other then that dude, use your ears. Trust your ears.

Lastly, dont boost alot. Cut way more then boost. Cut in places to shape your sound rather then boost. You can achieve more that way and you can make room more in your mix.

Hope this helps!

when i cut more than boost all my sounds just seem dull

all eq is is volume control. you are making everything louder and things are fighting with one another. You need to cut alot. you can do LP or HP without changing the “meat” like I said before. thats step #1.

But if your sounds are dull, its because you are used to boosting too much. Check out the two links below. Tell me if that helps.
