Fattening up a lead/bass sound

any one got any good tip, got a sound im quite into, but the more i listen to it the thinner it sems to get, its just not cutting thru, have tried a little compression and eq but have failed!!

Try a little filtered sidechain compression - use a spectrum analyser to see which frequencies are clashing and then add an auto filter to your sidechain compression so that only those frequencies are ducked instead of the whole thing.

Add some detune to your lead and or some chorus effect. See what that does for your sound. For the bass…COMPRESSION. I would add some sidechain to get that pumping effect if thats what you’re desiring.

Remix the oscillators

Can you post it so we can hear it  within your track ,then we could help further ?

surprise surprise i still struggle with this lol

i normally duplicate my bass channel once happy with it to beef it up, also use waves rbass sometimes to make it loud but i’ll admit i haven’t got a clue what i’m doing when i mess with the levels.

think one ofmy main problems is that i use a bass note sample rather than getting a bass note from a synth\vst plugin

I’m a great believer in this actually for phattening up bass in a very straightforward way…

gotta agree with that and BBE Sonic Maximizer

if its a lead/bass then the mix between the Oscillator and Sub Oscillator is very important, Using some detune on the higher Oscillator will help thicken the sound as well as finding the right point on the filter so that you get a good balance of bite and depth, maybe using a bit of filter modulation to breath live into the sound.

cheers guys will give this a try!

o yeah, what spectrum analysers do you guys use, and any resons why you chose it over other, dont have one any more after i stopped using logic

i use Abletons one mainly because if you move your pointer over the plug-in it lets you know the Key in that frequency range

I use abletons, because I dont want to pay for another one…

Abletons one also has a good feature, when you click into the Analyzer screen it enlarges which makes it really easy to see the peaks

know of any good ones outside of ableton, not a user you see
