I’m curious what the “envelope” nob does (on the filter controls) on certain synths. Synths like Sylenth1 don’t seem to have it ( at least explicitly ), where as trilogy for example does. If I had to guess it almost sounds like it lowers the start point for the cut off, but I really have no clue.
Thanks,
Kevin
envelopes control a parameter over time.
so on a filter envelope you can set it so that when a key is pressed the filter starts with a high cut of then goes low.
sylenth has asignable ENVs so you can assign an env to filter cut off or volume or anything really.
you should check out Subtractive synthesis 101
Thanks for the fast reply Phil,
I should have made the question a bit clearer. I have watched the subtractive synthesis 101 tutorial and am fairly comfortable with using envelopes to modulate other parameters within sylenth.
I am comfortable using envelopes in other synths as well but the “envelope” nob on the filter itself has always been a bit of a mystery to me. For instance I want to have a punchy and short bass sound so I set an envelope with no attack, sustain or release and a quick decay then have that affect the cutoff. In sylenth1 this is really the end of the story.
To achieve the same thing in trilogy I would setup the same envelop on the filter envelope then have the filter envelope modulate the cutoff. This part makes sense to me, the “envelope” nob on the filter is what gives me confusion. How does this affect the envelope I have just made for the bass? I’m guessing it in some way pertains to the filter envelope, but how the ratio of this nob affects said envelope has always been a bit confusing for me.
Ok my friend explained this to me and I think it makes sense now.
In case anyone is interested, the filter envelope nob sets the amount that the filter envelope modulates the cutoff (effectively “scaling” the envelope I guess?).
I guess this means that I have been using other synths like sylenth1 when I did not need to. Since the cutoff if automatically modulated by the filter envelope I would want to adjust the filter envelope amount instead of setting the filter envelope to modulate the cutoff myself then adjusting this modulation amount (this was having a very similar effect but is a retarded way to go about accomplishing this in synths with a filter envelope).
Sorry to waste everyone’s time!
Yeah its the one of the things sylenth does a bit werid
99% of other synths have a hard wired wired filter envelope.
