Dear all
I call up on all signed and knowledgeable artist/producers who have signed there first deal.
i have produced a trance track that has finally court the attention of a vocalist who is signed to one of the biggest trance labels out there. The vocalist wants to use my track on their up and coming solo album with their vocals over the top. (obviously I'm ecstatic and very excited. This artists and label combined is the equivalent of buying a Ferrari for your first car and Beyonce sat in the passenger seat!
As this is to be my first single released what I want to know is where I stand in regards to royalties and what I need to do from here. The Vocalist is writing the lyrics to my track now and should be released at the end of summer. I have suggested a skype call to iron things out but it yet has to take place.... also I don't want to sounds like a novice who made the track using only a laptop, ableton and various plug-ins sat in my kitchen..... (which is what i did)
So far i have looked at entertainment lawyers however the cast a packet and i don't have the cash ready to do this>>>>>
Any Help, Tips or recommendations will be greatly appreciated! thank you guys.... a link to my track is below if you are interested in hearing it....

Its normally a 50/50 thing with you and the vocalist.
Recording royalties normally work in 2 ways.
50/50 Deal - Label gives small advance but gives you 50% of net profits after ALL their cost have been recovered. Their cost would include everything do do with your track… right down to pens and pencils.
Standard royalty deal (normally between 15-17%) They can only recoup recording, remixing & Video costs which should be kept pretty low if you are finishing off the track yourself. This will normally include remix/Video cost so be careful they dont blow everything on a Tiesto mix and a 20k video.
They will also try to get you to give them your publishing and management but its generally considered a conflict of interests to sign management and publishing with the label.
That being said “360” Deals are more common… that just means every time you fart they will take a cut. DJing, Remix work, Publishing, recording the lot.
Id say the most import thing is to keep your self away from lengthy deals that commit you to too many releases from a particular Label. this means if it does all go tits up for 1 or 2 tracks you can move on without them holding anything over you.
Hey congratulations! You must be stoked - well done!
Care to relate the tale of how you got noticed?
Hay - thanks for your help on that - means a lot
i sent my track to the vocalists not expecting a reply - low and behold - she liked it
my advice… always ask - you never know!
How’d you find the vocalists?
EDIT: Almost forgot: congratulations! Glad you’re seeing success!
Hi
i just emailed her on face book - didnt even think sjhe would come back to me
lessen learnt - always ask! lol
Indeed.
What I meant, though, was how did you become familiar with the vocalist(s)? Just listening to tracks? Lots of times there’s no credit given.
That song is bomb! can you tell us a little about your production methods? like what brand of EQ and processors did you use to make it sound the way it does?
How did you get the guitar, is it you playing?
Hi
Im familiar with the vocalist just through listening to sunlounger/DJ Shah ect - she has worked with him in the past and an i thought i would send her my track - she liked it and got back in touch
Hi Phil
All the production is done in ableton live 8 and the EQ’s are all the standard eq’s that come with the Suit package. The application i use is EQ8…
In regards to the guitars - it’s 3 samples i have mashed and chopped with various effects, ping pong, simple delay and reverb and some tight eq-ing from eq8 and one guitar that is a live recording.
its only been 8 months since i started producing so im v pleased with teh finished product and the response, feedback and interest from said affiliated artists…
long live trance!
