Gating / Cut Offs

Hi,

I need help on Cubase SX, i want to control the frequencies on my sound or sample by using an adjustable graph so i can see where im cutting below or above frequencies or even mid-range. Is there a program on Cubase that gives me that option and is there any other programs that anyone can recommend that are good ones for this type of use?

I want to have more control over some sounds but haven’t found out how to do this yet.

Also is this all the same as Gating?

Could really do with some in depth help on this one

your first question sounds like a graphic parametric eq your are after… or possibly a filter… maybe if you could explain in more depth i could recommend something.

a gate basically cuts out the audio when the sound dips past a certain threshold… you can add an eq in to the mix to create stuff like deessers etc. some also have the ability to side chain which is useful say if you wanted the strings to dip when a lead sound came in .

I think the graphic EQ is the one, its so if i have a sound but there is too much high in there, or infact not even needed in there, then i can take that out. Or the same for any lows or mids.

It’s just so that when i put things together it becomes more cleaner because any highs that may be coming from my lows wont be phasing out some of the highs i’ve put into there and vice versa again.

Also Phil, could you recommend where i could get some good Kick drums from? The one that came with the Cubase tutorial was good but i want to find a selection of different ones, maybe more beefy ones for trance or some other types for House.

(i want to produce both)

Or is it better to just get kicks from the VSTs?

Many thanks mate.

your absolutely right in your thinking of getting rid of un-needed frequencies… i normaly have a hi-pass and a low-pass filter on everything for that exat reason

sonalksis tbk is my fav filter at present… tc works cut filter is good. also abletons built in autofilter works too…

for kicks… just sample tunes you like… theres noramaly a clean kick at the start or the end of a track…

alternatively try… vengeance series sample cds… loads of kick etc.
