Hey team.
I’m doing a piece on creative use of Gating. I just wondered if any of you guys had any ideas on clever gate techniques, or any preferred VSTs you use etc?
I already got some ideas for using unusual side chain sources, gating reverb etc. Just wondered if you cats had anything to share.
Thx
the only time i’ve ever used a gate was to remove the remaining drums and percussion from the back ground of a vocal. they are good for cleaning up movie samples when you want to remove the background noise
i personally like the Sonalksis Gate
I’m including the broader sense of gating in this too, like stuttering vocals with envelopes etc.
I’ve got a bunch of stuff already, I just wanted to ask the team incase there is any cool stuff I’ve not thought of.
Specifially any funky routing of audio/midi/sends etc.
only used gate for a stutter effect when the sidechain is activated. i have heard you can alter the transients and release parts of drums and toms to get rid of part of the sound from the hit
i only use a gate to let people into my community…
Araldfx’s stormgate 3 is pretty amazing, i think they stopped selling software though

What DAW are you using?
Ableton, but the article is DAW independent

I know a few cool things you can do in Logic using ultrabeat as a gate. But in ableton, Tom cosm is the man!

Been ages since I been on tom cosm’s site, forgot how good some of his vids are!
